Belfast City Hall is opening up to holistic health classes – thanks to the Lord Mayor, Councillor Nichola Mallon, who has organised the four days of fitness as part of her drive to open up city hall.
Commuters can choose to waken up with tai chi, pilates, yoga or dance, with classes beginning at 7.30am. The free classes are also being offered at 12.30pm and at 5.15pm to entice shoppers, office workers, visitors and young people to join in.
Everyone is welcome to attend the classes which begin on Monday, 18 August and run until Thursday, 21 August and which will last between 45 minutes and an hour.
Councillor Mallon said: “The classes are aimed at improving mental and physical health and are suitable for all ages because they are low impact. The idea is to de-stress, while improving strength and posture.
“The three times a day offer before work, during lunchtime and after work allows the widest range of people to try them, everyone from commuters to visitors, and of course council staff. I intend to try some of them myself and I hope many other people will do the same,” said the Lord Mayor.
“It’s another fun step forward in my drive to open up city hall and the great thing is it can help improve our city’s health by helping people find an exercise they like and are happy to continue.”
Pre-registration is not required for any of the classes.
The Lord Mayor is also hoping young people visiting the city will take part in the classes with a Dance with Fitness Freddy class on Monday, 18 August at 12.30pm which children should enjoy and a special Yoga for Kids session on Wednesday, 20 August at 12.30pm.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, 19 August Councillor Mallon is also hosting a GAA football and hurling event in the grounds of city hall from 3-5pm and on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, the Lord Mayor is planning a beach party with a range of family fun event on the lawns of city hall.
