Experiencing “The Drifters’ Girl” is like embarking on a captivating journey that not only celebrates a rich musical legacy but also tells a poignant story rooted in real-life struggles and triumphs. This musical, which has captivated audiences beyond its celebrated stint in London’s West End, offers more than a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it presents a deeply moving narrative centered around Faye Treadwell, the formidable manager of The Drifters, whose resilience and pioneering spirit in the face of sexism and racism is nothing short of inspirational.
Treadwell, portrayed with a blend of sass and strength, emerges as the heartbeat of the show, leading the all-male ensemble of The Drifters to unprecedented heights. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination, marking her as one of the first African American women to break the glass ceiling in music management.
The musical brilliantly encapsulates the evolution of The Drifters over three decades, set against the backdrop of a society grappling with racial prejudice. It’s a tribute to their enduring legacy, showcasing how the group, through its changing lineup and the visionary leadership of Treadwell, left an indelible mark on music history.
The narrative is brought to life by an exceptionally talented cast, whose vocal prowess pays fitting homage to The Drifters’ iconic hits. Carly Mercedes Dyer shines as Treadwell, delivering a powerhouse performance that captures the essence of her character. Miles Anthony Daley, mesmerizes with his vocal delivery, standing out even among a cast of standout performers. Ashford Campbell’s rendition of “Stand By Me” and “This Magic Moment” is a highlight.
The ensemble’s ability to switch roles seamlessly adds a dynamic layer to the storytelling, reflecting the many faces that have been part of The Drifters over the years. This, coupled with Anthony Ward’s ingenious stage design and Karen Bruce’s vibrant choreography, makes for a visually stunning production.
Humor is skillfully woven into the fabric of the show, providing levity amidst the more serious themes of struggle and perseverance. Jaydah Bell-Ricketts, as Treadwell’s daughter, introduces a refreshing perspective, linking the past’s struggles with the present’s ongoing challenges.
While the musical dazzles with its performances and production values, it occasionally rushes through its rich narrative. The rapid pace, especially in the beginning, may leave some audience members scrambling to keep up with the unfolding events and historical context.
Despite these moments of whirlwind storytelling, “The Drifters’ Girl” remains a compelling tale of music, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of Faye Treadwell. It’s a musical feast that not only gets you on your feet with its infectious tunes but also touches your heart with its profound message. The standing ovation that greets the cast at the curtain call is a well-deserved tribute to a show that entertains, enlightens, and profoundly moves its audience. “The Drifters’ Girl” is a must-see production that runs until Saturday, promising an unforgettable theatre experience.
