Guildford Strike Late To End Giants Winning Streak

The Stena Line Belfast Giants lost out for the first time in nine games on Sunday in Guildford. The Flames edged a spirited contest 3-2 with Calle Ackered’s game winning goal coming with less than five minutes remaining.

Despite Sunday’s loss – the Giants can boast a productive weekend on the road after back-to-back wins in Milton Keynes on Friday and Saturday. The Giants, playing their third clash of a three game road weekend, were impressive against the Flames in their only game of the weekend.

The Giants started with Tyler Beskorowany in goal and were missing Colin Shields, Pat Dwyer, Matt Towe, Jim Vandermeer and Andrew Dickson.

Powerplays On Top In Opening Period

The home side opened the scoring at 6:19 as Kruise Reddick struck on the powerplay, assisted by Calle Ackered.

Darcy Murphy cancelled out the Flames opener at 12:35 as the Giants hit back with a powerplay effort of their own.

Giants Reply After Guildford Powerplay Strikes Again

The Flames restored their one goal advantage at 35:20 with their second powerplay goal of the game. This time it was Calle Ackered, assisted by John Dunbar and Ian Watters.

Almost immediately after the Guildford goal saw the gloves dropped as Dustin Johner went toe-to-toe with Evan Ritt in Guildford at 35:30.

Little over two minutes later and the scores were level yet again. The Stena Line Belfast Giants’ Kyle Baun was on hand to bundle the puck home from close range, unassisted at 37:38.

Ackered’s Powerplay Goal Seals Win

Calle Ackered fired home the decisive goal with just under five minutes remanining to give the Flames a one goal lead. Ackered’s strike was the home side’s third powerplay goal of the game, assisted by John Dunbar and Kruise Reddick at 55:25.
