Translink is marking Green Transport Week with a series of events, showcases and milestones which will champion public transport and active travel as a simple way for individuals to play their part in creating a cleaner, greener environment whilst also enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of active travel.
Throughout the week dedicated to highlighting the environmental benefits of public transport, Translink will host events including a showcase of zero emission mini-buses in Coleraine; the launch of gardening and biodiversity competition, Ulster in Bloom; a sustainability-themed Novel Journey’s Book Club; in-station music performances; historic rail walking tours; and engagement with young people and workplaces to promote public transport.
Recent statistics show that transport accounts for 35% of all consumed energy in Northern Ireland and 23% of all greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from private car use. Public transport will play a vital role in helping Northern Ireland reach a low carbon economy as well as benefiting society’s economic, social, and environmental wellbeing.
Green Transport Week is part of a month-long Active Travel Challenge initiative which encourages the public to leave the car at home and use active modes of travel such as bus, train, walking or cycling. To register and start logging your journeys, visit Active Travel Challenge (getmeactive.org.uk)
