Colin Shields, Belfast Giants

Led by a hat trick from man of the match Colin Shields, the Stena Line Belfast Giants completed a 9-3 demolition of the Dundee Stars to round off 2014 in emphatic style. Shields netted his 6th hat trick in Giants colours and hit a personal milestone of 200 goals in the Elite League with his first of the evening.

Two goals each from Mike Kompon and Kevin Westgarth as well as strikes from Darryl Lloyd and Mark McCutcheon filled the Giants side of the game sheet while Swindlehurst, Ringrose and Quick tallied for Dundee.

The Giants came out all guns blazing in the first period, needing only 3:23 to break the deadlock. Coming from the first powerplay, Mike Kompon was awarded the goal after a helpful deflection off a Stars defenceman. However, just over a minute later Paul Swindlehurst evened things up for Dundee. A quick response was needed from the Giants and that’s what the fans got – Darryl Lloyd made it 2-1 with his third goal against Dundee in as many games this season, having to push through some aggressive play from the Stars. Colin Shields netted his 200th Elite League goal with the Giants third at 15:18.

The second period consisted of one way traffic with the Giants adding four more during the 20 minutes with McCutcheon the first to deservedly write his name on the scoresheet at 22:44. Two more goals for the highlight reel came from Kevin Westgarth at 30:13 with a massive slapshot from the point, and Shields then perfectly placed for the puck to come off the bottom of the bar and over the crease less than a minute later. The Giants made it 7-1 with just 3 seconds remaining in the period when Kompon put the puck past Holland for the second time tonight.

The third period saw both Andrew Dickson and Holland in net for what was to be a feisty final frame. Ringrose quickly pulled one back for Dundee at 40:33, but Man of the Match Colin Shields was quick to add another to his tally less than a minute later. Dundee then made it 3 from Kevin Quick who beat Dickson top shelf. The score was finished off by another blue-line slapshot from Westgarth to ensure the Giants took the 9-3 victory.
