With Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from the 2023 French Open came the sad realisation that another legend of tennis is drawing near to the end of his career. Following Roger Federer’s retirement last year, it’s looking more and more likely that Nadal will be hanging up his racket before too long.
While Novak Djokovic still marches on as a frequent favourite in the men French Open odds, there will soon be a time where the next wave of stars will be required to carry the men’s game forward. Let’s take a look at three players ready to take on the mantle and carve out a rivalry as absorbing as that between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic over the years.
Carlos Alcaraz
Let’s face it, Carlos Alcaraz is already a superstar. The Spaniard burst onto the scene a couple of years ago and continues to go from strength to strength on the ATP Tour and in the Grand Slams. A fast, powerful player possessing every shot in the book, he also seems to have the same desire and resilience that defines his compatriot Nadal.
Alcaraz claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, and the victory at Flushing Meadows felt like a major breakthrough. It was proof to tennis fans all around the world, and indeed to Alcaraz himself, that he was ready to step forward and become a serial winner of the game’s biggest tournaments.
The 20-year-old is especially dominant on clay, and many are tipping him to enjoy a similar spell of success at Roland-Garros to that of Nadal. Alcaraz still has so many years ahead of him, and providing he can stay fit and healthy in the coming years, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t rake in the Grand Slam titles.
Daniil Medvedev
At 27 years of age, Daniil Medvedev is considerably older than the other two players on our list, but you could argue that the continued dominance of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic over the last few years has left the Russian a little lighter in terms of Grand Slam titles than he otherwise would have been.
His only major triumph to date is the 2021 US Open, but he has reached two other Grand Slam finals, running into the considerable heft of Djokovic and Nadal in successive Australian Open showpieces. As time goes on, you’d expect Medvedev to amass a much greater tally of Grand Slam triumphs, and there’s no reason why he can’t continue to compete at the very top for another 10 years or so.
Holger Rune
One of the most exciting young talents on the men’s tennis circuit is Denmark’s Holger Rune. The 20-year-old enjoyed a fine run to the quarter-finals of last year’s French Open, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas before losing to eventual runner up Casper Ruud.
Ruud is a powerful, dynamic player, and his exciting style is already turning plenty of heads. He lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year, which suggests he still has some way to go to be considered a Grand Slam contender, but the potential is there for all to see.
