London is England’s capital and is arguably one of the world’s most influential and recognisable cities. As with any capital city, London is extremely busy. If you are planning on visiting, then there are a few things that you can do that can minimise the amount of stress that you experience trying to navigate the city’s cobblestone streets and wide boulevards.
Experiencing London as a tourist doesn’t have to be an absolute nightmare. In fact, with this article’s tips, it will be a very pleasant and fun experience.
Luggage Storage
One of the worst things about visiting London as a tourist is trying to carry one’s luggage around. This is because the streets are so busy, that it makes moving large, heavy objects almost impossible. You constantly have to weave in and out of people and traffic. One effective solution to this problem is to use Kings Cross luggage storage facilities. You are able to store your luggage in the train station’s storage area, which allows you to only take the luggage that you need with you to your hotel and around London. When you are done you can return to the station and pick everything else up (or swap things in and out).
Walking Around
A lot of people use public transportation when they are living in London, but it’s really unnecessary. If you are in relatively good physical condition, then a better alternative to taking public transport is to just walk around. With that said, walking is only really suitable if you are going to be in the city’s central area. If you are on the outskirts then public transport will, unfortunately, be necessary. London’s public transport is very efficient, but it can get very crowded at times. It’s also worth noting there are myriad rental bicycles dotted around the city, which you can use to get around for a small fee.
The Underground
Every Londoner’s preferred mode of transport is the underground. The London Underground is a network of underground train services, that run throughout the city. If you are intending on visiting London and won’t want to be walking around, then you can take the underground train anywhere in the city. Some underground trains double as overground trains also, so don’t be confused if you arrive at a station that runs through the underground, but it is an overground platform. London’s underground system is very efficient, and fast, but it can get crowded, so bear this in mind if you are travelling with children. The best way to book tickets for the London Underground is to use an online app because online apps are more efficient and a lot less stressful to use.
Visiting Times
Because London is England’s capital city, it doesn’t really matter what season you visit in, because it will be exceptionally busy regardless. However, if you are intending on visiting actual sites (like Buckingham Palace or Tower Bridge), then the best way to ensure that there’s nobody else there ruining your experience is to visit early in the morning. The city really doesn’t come alive until around six in the morning. If you’re visiting in the summer, then the sun will be up long before then, meaning that you will be able to experience all of these sites and destinations all alone, without anybody else there ruining your time or getting in the way of your photographs.
Bed and Breakfasts
If you want to save money on accommodation, then the best way of doing this is to stay in a bed and breakfast, rather than in one of the city’s many overpriced hotels. A bed and breakfast will be a fantastic way for you to save money and get a nice breakfast delivered to your room to start the day. The city abounds with bed and breakfasts, so finding one shouldn’t be difficult. You can also book a room in a hostel, which should be very cheap. You can find a lot of hostels in the city’s central area.
Travel Pass
If you intend on taking public transportation, then you can actually buy a travel pass that will allow you to travel on the city’s trains and busses. This pass is called an Oyster card. If you are planning on getting one of these cards, then it’s a good idea to pick one up online. Remember that if you plan on travelling on public transportation, then you first need to familiarise yourself with the city’s various bus and train stations, otherwise you won’t be able to read the maps put up in train and bus terminals telling you where you are going.
London is a very fun city, but it can also be very stressful. If you are visiting for the first time, then this post’s guidance will help your trip to be a lot less confusing, and a lot more pleasant.
