Everything You Need to Know About WoW Before Starting It in 2025

World of Warcraft has been around for two decades now, and it’s still going strong. Thousands of players log in every day, and Blizzard isn’t slowing down either, actively working on fresh content, with a full roadmap planned months in advance.

So if you’re thinking about jumping into the game, now’s actually one of the best times to do it. And if you have no idea where to start—don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s a quick and easy guide to everything you need to know before stepping into WoW in 2025.

What Is WoW All About?

In simple words, WoW is an enormous fantasy world that you share with other players. You create and customize your hero and dive into all kinds of adventures, exploring different continents that are filled with unique zones, creatures, and stories.

The game can roughly be divided into two major stages: leveling and endgame. During the leveling phase, your main goal is to earn experience and unlock new abilities, locations, and content. Once you max out, you enter the endgame, which is home to WoW’s most difficult and exciting activities. Here, your power is no longer about your level, but about your item level, which depends on the quality of your gear.

No matter what stage you’re at, there are tons of things to do, from completing quests and defeating monsters to farming World of Warcraft gold and battling other players on Arenas. But before we break down all of the game’s core activities, there’s one question left to answer: Which version of WoW should you play?

Versions of World of Warcraft

You’ve probably noticed already that there isn’t just one World of Warcraft, but several different versions that all go by slightly different names.

There are two main branches available:

  • Modern WoW (aka Retail)

This is the latest, most updated version, currently running the The War Within expansion. It’s where all the new zones, raids, classes, and story developments are added.

  • WoW Classic

This is a recreation of the original WoW experience from 2004. Classic also has its own sub-versions, like Cataclysm Classic (remake of the Cataclysm expansion), Hardcore (original game but your character only has one life), Season of Discovery (original game that gets regular updates), and more.

How The Game Is Structured

Most of the game boils down to two main types of activities: PvP and PvE.

PvE (Player vs Environment)

From the very beginning, you’ll be fighting against computer-controlled enemies, and the majority of your time will be spent doing PvE activities:

  • Quests: In-game missions with objectives and rewards that you receive upon completion.
  • Dungeons: Instances where your team of 5 players defeats enemies and bosses. There are different difficulty tiers:
    • Normal, Heroic, and Mythic
    • Mythic+, which involves timed runs with increasing difficulty and various modifiers that spice up the fights
  • Raids: Massive group content where 10-40 players work together to take down powerful enemies and earn some of the best loot in the game.
  • Delves: Mini-dungeons designed for solo or small-group play. Available in Retail WoW only.
  • World Bosses: Huge monsters that spawn in the open world and require many players to defeat.

PvP (Player vs Player)

If fighting other players sounds more exciting, WoW has a huge PvP scene for you to conquer:

  • Battlegrounds: Large-scale team battles where players compete to complete objectives and earn rewards. In Rated Battlegrounds, you also receive rank points and get rewarded according to your rating.
  • Arenas offersmaller-scale fights (2v2, 3v3, or Solo Shuffle). Climbing the ranking ladder earns you powerful gear, exclusive titles and mounts.
  • World PvP: Available by default on some servers. In Retail WoW, you can also toggle War Mode to allow PvP fights at any time.

What Else Should You Know?

Now that you know what kinds of activities you can engage in, let’s quickly cover a few more important aspects every new player should understand.

Professions

Every character can learn two primary professions and as many secondary ones as they want. Professions let you gather resources or craft various items, giving you a great way to make gold and gear up.

Auction House

Think of it as WoW’s version of a giant marketplace. Players buy and sell all kinds of items there, from materials and gear to fun collectibles, and some make very good money on those sales.

Gold

Gold is the universal in-game currency. You’ll use it to do pretty much everything from buying gear and consumables to training skills and trading at the Auction House, and it’s absolutely crucial if you want to keep progressing.

There are plenty of ways to make gold in WoW. You can:

  • Do quests to sell rewards or earn raw gold
  • Gather or craft items for sale with Professions
  • Run dungeons to sell mob drops
  • Farm mobs in the open world and sell the loot
  • Buy cheap items at the Auction House and resell them at a higher price

Final Word

World of Warcraft offers an enormous level of freedom that very few MMOs can match. You get to shape your own adventure and do anything you want—the game will give you all the tools to make it happen.

So play at your own pace, set your own goals, and, most importantly, enjoy the journey.
See you in Azeroth!
