This holiday season, the Lyric Theatre presents an enchanting and novel rendition of the classic fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel.” This production, brilliantly directed by Patrick J O’Reilly, showcases a fresh interpretation by playwright Tara-Lynne O’Neill, known for her work in “Derry Girls,” and features an array of captivating songs composed by Katie Richardson. Running from November 24, 2023, to January 6, 2024, this musical promises to be a delightful treat for audiences of all ages.

In this vibrant reimagining, audiences are invited to join the journey of Hansel (Odhrán McNulty) and Gretel (Catriona McFeely), alongside the playful Monty the mouse (Conor Quinn). They embark on an adventure through a whimsically colorful enchanted forest, meeting various woodland creatures portrayed by Mark Dugdale and Christina Nelson. The narrative builds up to a climactic confrontation with the witch (Orla Gormley) in her alluring candy house.

Jimmy Fay, the Executive Producer at Lyric Theatre, emphasizes the show as a perfect festive indulgence, combining the talents of a remarkable creative team and cast. Tara-Lynne O’Neill expresses her inspiration drawn from the Grimm brothers’ own life stories, emphasizing themes of resilience and the power of dreams.

While the first half of the musical leans heavily on musical numbers, the second half balances this with more dialogue, providing deeper context to the unfolding events. The production excels in its costume design and set pieces, which vividly bring to life the iconic library and the witch’s sweetie house from the original tale. Notably, the play shifts focus, highlighting Monty the mouse’s perspective, adding an innovative twist to the story.

Mark Dugdale delivers an exceptional performance, and Christina Nelson consistently captivates the audience, regardless of her role, infusing humor and vitality into the show. Orla Gormley’s portrayal of Myrtle the witch adds a quirky and amusing element to the production.

Tickets for this magical journey start at £12.50, offering an opportunity to experience a reimagined classic filled with laughter, vibrant characters, and engaging music. This new twist on “Hansel and Gretel” at the Lyric Theatre is a must-see this Christmas season, promising an unforgettable experience for both the young and the young at heart.
