The Stena Line Belfast Giants made it three points from a possible four this weekend following a a 6-3 win over the Capitals in Edinburgh. Two late goals from Alex Foster and Blair Riley saw the visitors take a deserved win, cheered on by a large and loud band of travelling Giants fans.
The win gives the Giants a three point weekend following Saturday night’s overtime defeat in Fife. Next up for the Belfast side is a clash with the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday at The SSE Arena, Belfast.
Chris Higgins opened the scoring for the Giants after 8:28, assisted by Michael Forney, which gave the visitors a 1-0 lead going into the second period.
Forney then turned from provider to scorer on the Giants second goal of the game with a cool finish at 32:42, assisted by Colin Shields and Chris Higgins. Michael DOrazio pulled one back for the Capitals with 4:51 remaining in the middle period when his deflected shot found the net on the powerplay.
However, Steve Saviano extended the Giants lead and restored their two goal advantage with a nice backhand finish, assisted by Colin Shields and Matt Nickerson.
Into the final period and the Giants made it 4-1 on the night after only 41 seconds gone as Blair Riley netted from Michael Forney’s pass.
Michal Dobron pulled one back for the home side at 47:03, assisted by Karel Hromas and Matt Tipoff before Ian Schultz made it a one goal game little over one minute later when he scored at 48:13, assisted by Matt Tipoff and Pavel Vorobyev.
Despite their lead being narrowed to one, the Giants put pressure on the hosts and Alex Foster scored at 58:28 with a powerplay goal, assisted by Steve Saviano and James Desmarais. 24 seconds later and the Giants had a sixth goal as Blair Riley fished off a nice move from Chris Higgins.
The Giants return to action on Saturday with their first home game in a month, against the Sheffield Steelers at 7pm. Sunday sees the Giants return to Manchester for their second game against the Storm in as many weeks in an Elite League encounter. The Giants will return to Manchester the following Wednesday for the Challenge Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg.
