ACCLAIMED TV presenter and personality Eamonn Holmes has become an official Ambassador of Northern Ireland Hospice and Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

The Belfast-born This Morning (ITV) host joins Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, young golf star Tom McKibben and Miss Northern Ireland Anna Henry on an impressive list of ambassadors supporting one of Northern Ireland’s largest charities.

Holmes, who was raised in north Belfast close to Northern Ireland’s Hospice’s adult and children’s hospice facilities, is the longest serving and most popular TV host in the UK, with a career spanning more than 35 years.

He said: “It is a great honour to be invited to become an Ambassador of Northern Ireland Hospice, a wonderful organisation providing palliative care at hospice and in the Northern Ireland community.

“Northern Ireland Hospice is part of the fabric of north Belfast where I grew up. It was always there, always helping people, and local people had a great appreciation of the hospice’s work and have always been there to support it.

“Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is the only children’s hospice in the country and I have seen first-hand the immeasurable professionalism and care afforded to young patients and indeed their families.

“I had no hesitation in taking up the invitation to represent Northern Ireland Hospice as an Ambassador and I hope my association will go a long way to spreading the knowledge of palliative care in Northern Ireland while encouraging others to support the organisation.

“Many of us may have an impression that Hospice care is for older citizens or exclusively for those suffering from cancer related conditions. The fact that Northern Ireland Hospice cares for local people with dementia, motor neurone disease and respiratory conditions as well as cancer, and provides symptom-management and complementary therapies, is something that really impressed me and left me with no reservations about doing what I can to help and support.”

The former UTV and Sky News presenter also visited Northern Ireland Hospice and NI Children’s Hospice this week and met with patients and care team staff.

Northern Ireland Hospice CEO Heather Weir said: “Eamonn Holmes is one of our finest Northern Ireland exports. His career has taken him to the very top but Eamonn has always remained proud of his roots and has on many occasions been a positive voice for his home city, his country and the people of Northern Ireland.

“It brings us great joy to enlist Eamonn as an Ambassador to Northern Ireland Hospice. He has committed to raising awareness of our care services in our adult and children’s hospices and in the community.”
