Dundonald International Ice Bowl is poised to undergo a transformative redevelopment, infused with a multi-million-pound investment. It has received the official approval, with the existing Ice Bowl continuing its operations amid the construction phase.

Last night’s council meeting marked the commencement of this ambitious project, endorsing enhancements including an Olympic-sized ice rink, a spacious 24-lane bowling alley, a sophisticated gym, community-centric spaces, and welcoming dining options.

The project, heralded as a ‘landmark commitment’ by LCCC Chief Executive, David Burns, has secured a £52 million allocation from Lisburn and Castlereagh City Councillors, to be channelled over three years, supplementing the £12.2 million already pledged by the UK Government’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities (DLUHC).

Dundonald International Ice Bowl stands as a premier attraction in Northern Ireland, welcoming over half a million annual visitors since its inauguration in 1986. With the redevelopment, the facility aspires to elevate visitor engagement to over 700,000 in its first revamped year, scheduled to be unveiled to the public in 2026.

Councillor Andrew Gowan, The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, emphasized the strategic value of the Ice Bowl as the sole Olympic-sized ice rink in Northern Ireland and its significant role as a development ground for elite ice skaters and the training abode for the Belfast Giants.

The comprehensive enhancement strategy promises not only an expansion in recreational avenues but also a substantial economic uplift, job creation, and a boost to tourism in the LCCC area and beyond, fostering local rejuvenation and promoting inclusivity and equal access to pivotal health and wellness activities.

With the groundwork expected to initiate later this year, the rejuvenated facility aims to offer an enriched experience for all patrons, encompassing superior accessibility and a diverse range of equipment, fostering enjoyment across the gym, ice, and bowling dimensions. The anticipation is building for the unveiling of this state-of-the-art leisure hub, a testament to innovative regeneration and community engagement.
