The football community is devastated following the sudden death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain at just 28 years old. His younger brother, Andre Silva (26), also tragically lost his life in the crash, which occurred in the province of Zamora.
Authorities confirmed that the car – a Lamborghini – veered off the road due to a tyre blowout and caught fire. The brothers were pronounced dead at the scene in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Jota, a key player for Liverpool FC and the Portugal national team, had recently celebrated his wedding to long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
He made nearly 50 appearances for Portugal, helping them secure Nations League titles in both 2019 and 2025, and played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Premier League success.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. The Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as “an extraordinary person” and “a reference in the community.” FC Porto, where both brothers began their football journey, also shared their condolences, saying they are “in mourning.”
A minute’s silence will be held at Portugal’s Women’s Euros game, as UEFA and the football world honour the legacy of both Diogo and Andre.
This is a tragic day for football.
Rest in peace, Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
