Ahoy there land lovers and seafarers! This May, Belfast’s quaysides play host to a fleet of Tall Ships as part of the 2014 Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival.
The festival, organised by Belfast City Council and supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Belfast Harbour, takes place over the late May Bank Holiday weekend – 24 to 26 May at Queen’s Quaysides.
The Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival will give you a taste of what to expect when the Tall Ships Race returns to Belfast in July 2015.
There will be plenty of free activities You’ll have an opportunity to learn more about Belfast’s unique maritime history, to board the Tall Ships and you won’t want to miss the thrilling pirate re-enactments on the River Lagan by Vilma and Soteria!
The Dock Café
Pop-up Market – cupcakes, Stew and chowder, Waffles, Italian ice cream, pulled pork, chutneys, jams and sauces. Craft: Photography, hand printed textiles, digital printed textiles, vintage jewels, screen prints, homeware, glass products, prints and illustrations. Located Unit A of the ARC buildings with a few outside. 11am – 4pm
Living history on board SS Nomadic. There will also be photo opportunities during the day with the captain. PLUS bring all your little pirates along for the ‘Pirates Parade’ between 3pm to 4pm.
Get the kids’ day off to an exciting start with pirate and kite making workshops with Young at Art along with face painting, and balloon modelling. Visit the Drawing Offices where Ocean Exploration Centre will have its road show set up for interactive science experiments, demonstrations, games and lots more. Activities run from 11am – 4pm. Next door Belfast Titanic Society will be delivering talks and interactive archive sessions in Drawing Offices 2.
Moving round to the plaza try your hand at Zip lining with the ‘We Are Vertigo’ team. Running from 11.30am to 3.30pm. There is also lots to keep those appetites at bay on the slipways including a BBQ, Cotton Candy & Popcorn carts.
T13 – RampRage Crew
There will be a Live DJ session and Freestyle BMX action with the RampRage Extreme Sports Crew. Get Active with BMX workshops from the T13 Urban Sports Academy Instructors. Demonstrations at 12noon, 2pm and 4pm. Located on the plaza next to Titanic Belfast.
Segway Tours NI
Have a go at Segway obstacle course and try out their new authentic baseball batting cages. Running from 11am – 4pm. Small charge applies.
Cable & Wake
Cable & Wake in association with Mastercraft Ireland, World Tournament Power Boats will be putting on a spectacular watersports display along the channel in Belfast Harbour this year! For the first time ever a selection of Ireland’s most impressive wake boarders and water-skiers as well as international champions will perform a mind blowing demonstration in Belfast Harbour! Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House
Join Mobile Team Adventure on the 8m high Climbing wall. Plus check out Ulster-Scots Family Fun at the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival. They have an action-packed weekend of Ulster-Scots activities for all the family from 11.00am to 4.00pm.
Daily activities will include a Doodlebugs craft workshop, face painting, Highland dancing, live Ulster-Scots music and living history (don’t miss your chance to meet some famous Ulster-Scots characters!)
On Saturday 24th May (11.00am) the Ulster-Scots Agency and Northern Ireland Science Park will officially launch the Ulster-Scots Innovators Gallery in the Thompson Dry Dock; a gallery of ten famous Ulster-Scots who made major discoveries, altered our understanding of the natural world and developed products and services of worldwide significance.
On Sunday 25th May the Ulster-Scots Agency Juvenile Pipe Band will join the festivities and perform in the colossal Thompson Dry Dock. Note: all activities are free of charge.
TQ Treasure Hunt
Don’t forget to pick up a Titanic Quarter events programme and try out the Titanic Quarter Heritage Treasure Hunt which will lead you on a journey of discovery throughout the Quarter. Plus the kids will learn about maritime and industrial heritage.
Among the visiting Tall Ships is Morgenster on its first visit to Belfast, and the welcome return of Pelican of London and the Gulden Leeuw.
The continental market will also be at Queen’s Quay so you can enjoy some food while listening to music and enjoying the entertainment.
There will be a Maritime Festival shuttle bus running between Chichester Street and the Odyssey and Titanic Belfast
