Belfast Giants win two games in one night!

The Stena Line Belfast Giants completed a four point weekend with two wins in as many nights at The SSE Arena, Belfast against the Edinburgh Capitals – the Giants making it three out of three wins in the Elite League. An overtime victory over the Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday night – 24 hours after the Challenge Cup contest began was followed up by a dominant 5-2 win in the Elite League clash.

After the confusion of Friday night’s tied 3-3 Challenge Cup game against the Edinburgh Capitals which should have went to overtime, Saturday night meant that Belfast giants had extra time and the possibility of penalties to attend with. Luckily Kris Beech scored the winner with just 10 seconds remaining.

The Elite League match  between the two teams then started. The Belfast Giants won 5-2  with James Desmarais netting his first two goals for the team and a well deserved man of the match for Mike Forney.

James Desmarais tipped in Derrick Walser’s shot from the blueline after 9:24 for his first goal for the Giants to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes into the second period Desmarais doubled his and the Giants scoring tally, firing home on the powerplay at 26:38.

Edinburgh pulled a goal back through Craig McCallum with a sharp finish at 36:52 however their hope was short lived with Michael Forney extending the Giants lead to 3-1 with a fine finish at 39:17.
Into the third period and, once again, the visitors pulled one goal back – this time it was Everett Sheen at 46:11, although the Giants struck soon after with Michael Forney scoring his fifth goal of the season, on the powerplay, 40 seconds after the Capitals second goal.

Less than three minutes later, it was 5-2 – with Jonathan Boxill notching his third of the season, scoring off Kris Beech’s pass with little over 10 minutes remaining.

The Giants are next in action on Saturday 26th September with a home Challenge Cup clash against the Braehead Clan followed by a road trip the next day to Coventry to take on the Blaze in the Elite League.
