Challenge Cup, Saturday 2 November 2024

The atmosphere was electric at the SSE Arena as the Belfast Giants took on the Fife Flyers in a thrilling Challenge Cup showdown. In a game filled with twists, turns, and high-stakes action, Adam Keefe’s squad staged an epic comeback, overturning a 2-0 deficit after the first period to secure a 5-3 victory. Here’s how the action unfolded:

First Period: Flyers Take Early Control

The Giants started strong, putting plenty of pucks on net, but Fife’s netminder Janis Voris was up to the task, making some impressive saves and keeping the Giants scoreless. Despite good chances for Grant Mismash and JJ Piccinich, it was the Flyers who struck first. At 6:35, Phelix Martineau capitalized on a defensive misplay behind the Giants’ net, putting Fife up 1-0.

The Flyers doubled their lead shortly after, with James Spence slipping a rebound past Jackson Whistle at 12:07 to make it 2-0. The Giants found themselves in a tough spot heading into the break, but they weren’t about to back down.

Second Period: Giants Rally Late

Despite some frustrations, the Giants’ persistence paid off in the second period. At 33:30, JJ Piccinich continued his recent hot streak, firing a Scott Conway pass from a narrow angle to pull one back, cutting the Flyers’ lead to 2-1.

The momentum started to shift, and Fife’s first penalty of the night added fuel to the fire. With just eleven seconds remaining in the period, Gabe Bast found the net on a power play, threading his shot through a crowd to level the score at 2-2. The stage was set for a nail-biting final period.

Third Period: Giants Seal the Deal

The Giants wasted no time in the third, taking the lead just 1:19 after the restart. Mark Cooper made it 3-2, connecting on another slick pass from Conway. The Giants’ confidence surged, and they quickly widened the gap. Scott Conway transitioned from playmaker to goal scorer at 49:40, finishing beautifully to put the Giants up 4-2.

A controversial play added to the drama, as Elijah Barriga was credited with a scrappy goal following a lengthy review. With the score at 5-2, Fife pushed back, managing one more goal in the final minutes, but it was too late. The Giants held on for a decisive 5-3 win, setting the tone for Sunday’s clash with the Dundee Stars.
