The Stena Line Belfast Giants opened their home season with a 6-2 win against the Manchester Storm at The SSE Arena, Belfast in front of well over 5,000 fans. Although the visitors let 2-1 after 20 minutes, the Giants skated away with the comfortable win on the largest opening night crowd since opening night at the Arena back in 2000.
Peacock opened the scoring, squeezing the puck in from close range with less than two minutes played. However, the Manchester Storm soon replied as Sisca equalised while Belfast’s Adam Keefe was in the penalty box serving a two minute interference.
Manchester then took the initiative with Scarsella scoring to give Storm a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Ejdepalm scored the equaliser after 32 minutes before the Storm were shocked with two Giants goals in the space of thirty seconds. Benedict converted a nice Chris Higgins pass to make it 3-2 – and almost right away it was 4-2 with Peacock firing home for his second of the evening.
Boxill scored his first goal at The SSE Arena, Belfast early in the third period before Mike Forney finished off a nice Chris Higgins move who set up the sixth and final Giants’ goal of the evening.
