The Stena Line Belfast Giants posted their first four point weekend of the 2017/18 season thanks to a 6-5 win away against the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday. The win in Scotland follows Saturday’s 7-4 home win over the Dundee Stars. Belfast now have five points from three games in Challenge Cup Group B and sit in first place.

With the Giants arriving to the Murrayfield Ice Rink later than scheduled due to heavy traffic, the home side took full advantage and opened the scoring. Alexander Islamov netted shorthanded at 7:07 to give the Capitals an opening period lead.

Dominant Belfast Take Control
The middle period was a different story as the Giants struck five times to take control of Sunday’s Challenge Cup clash.

First, Sebastien Sylvestre continued his fine form scoring 58 seconds into the second period, assisted by Steve Saviano and Colin Shields.

However Dylan Anderson made sure the home side were not level for long as the Capitals regained the lead at 26:29.

Spiro Goulakos equalised for the visitors with a fine unassisted effort. Then, at 32:04, it was 3-2 to Belfast as Cole Jarrett struck on the powerplay, assisted by Brendan Connolly.

Colin Shields helped to extend the Giants lead at 37:45 when he made it 4-2, assisted by Sebastien Sylvestre. Then, at 38:36, Darcy Murphy netted the Giants fifth of the period, assisted by Spiro Goulakos, as the visitors took a commanding lead into the final period.

Capitals Close In On Belfast
Michael D’Orazio brought the home side to within two goals with a powerplay goal at 45:06. However man of the match Sylvestre restored the Giants three goal advantage at 52:16 with an unassisted effort on the powerplay.

Mike Cazzola made it a 6-4 game at 54:08 and Taylor Stefishen’s powerplay goal at 56:54 ensured a nervy final few minutes in Murrayfield.

However the Giants, backstopped by Stephen Murphy in goal, closed out the game and earned Belfast’s second win in as many nights.
