The Belfast Giants saw their Elite Ice Hockey League Challenge Cup run come to an end on Wednesday night after a dramatic 6–3 defeat to the Coventry Blaze at The SSE Arena Belfast, with the visitors progressing 9–5 on aggregate.
In front of a passionate Belfast crowd, Adam Keefe’s side fought until the final buzzer, but Coventry’s clinical counter-attacking and two late empty-net goals sealed the result.
Fast Start for the Giants
The opening period began with early pressure from Coventry, but the Giants soon settled and began to create chances of their own.
The breakthrough arrived thanks to some individual brilliance from Brandon Whistle, who danced through the Blaze defence before setting up Carsen Twarynski to hammer home and ignite the SSE Arena.
The goal levelled the tie on aggregate and lifted the energy inside the arena.
The Giants continued to push, with chances for Ryan Smith and Jordan Kawaguchi, but Coventry responded late in the period. A loose puck in centre ice allowed Matthew Gleason to break clear and finish past Jake Kupsky, sending the teams into the first intermission tied 1–1 on the night.
Blaze Strike Against the Run of Play
The second period saw the Giants come out aggressively, creating several opportunities as they looked to swing momentum.
Despite the pressure, Coventry struck again on the counter. Matthew Gleason grabbed his second of the night with a well-taken finish, extending the Blaze’s aggregate advantage.
The Giants kept battling, but Coventry added another through Jere Vertanen, whose shot found its way through traffic to make it 3–1 to the visitors on the night.
Late Fightback from Belfast
The Giants refused to go quietly in the third period.
After Coventry added a fourth goal through Alessio Luciani, Belfast found another gear.
First Ryan Smith fired home to pull one back, before Carsen Twarynski grabbed his second of the night to make it 4–3 and give the home crowd renewed hope.
With the clock ticking down, the Giants pulled their netminder to chase the equaliser.
But the gamble backfired.
Two late empty-net goals from Jack Hopkins and Colton Saucerman sealed the victory for Coventry and confirmed the Blaze’s place in the Challenge Cup Final.
The Atmosphere Still Delivered
Despite the result, the atmosphere inside The SSE Arena Belfast was electric, with thousands of Giants fans roaring their team forward throughout the night.
It was another reminder of why Belfast remains one of the best hockey cities in Europe — a passionate fanbase that never stops believing.
Up Next for the Giants
The Giants now quickly turn their attention back to league action.
They remain at home this weekend for a crucial double-header against the Cardiff Devils, with games taking place on Saturday and Sunday at The SSE Arena Belfast.
With the Elite League title race heating up, these games could prove hugely important for the Giants’ season.
