🏆 SSE Arena Erupts as Giants Secure Fifth Challenge Cup Title in Seven Years
The Stena Line Belfast Giants delivered a statement performance on home ice, defeating the Cardiff Devils 4-0 to claim the 2024/25 Challenge Cup title in front of a roaring SSE Arena crowd.
A 37-save shutout from Jackson Whistle, combined with goals from Ciaran Long, J.J. Piccinich, Jordan Kawaguchi, and captain Mark Cooper, sealed a memorable victory, marking the Giants’ fifth Challenge Cup win in the past seven finals.

First Period: Giants Take Early Command
Despite a strong start from Cardiff, the Giants struck first with their opening real chance of the game. A shot from Elijiah Barriga deflected into the air and was expertly batted into the net baseball-style by Ciaran Long at 6:35 (1-0), sending the home crowd into celebration.
Jackson Whistle quickly became the difference-maker, turning away multiple Grade A scoring chances from the Devils, including a huge stop on Tyler Busch during an early penalty kill.
With just 56.8 seconds left in the period, the Giants doubled their lead through J.J. Piccinich. After winning a battle along the boards, Piccinich played a slick one-two with Scott Conway, finishing clinically past Mac Carruth (2-0). Whistle ensured the two-goal cushion remained intact, denying Cole Sanford with a pair of excellent late-period saves.
Second Period: Giants Extend Their Lead
The Giants wasted no time building on their lead, striking twice early in the second period.
Jordan Kawaguchi made it 3-0 just 89 seconds after the restart, hammering a one-timer from the slot. Moments later, Captain Mark Cooper added a fourth at 22:45, skating in from the right and banking his shot off the post and in (4-0).
With a commanding lead, the Giants’ defense tightened while Whistle continued his dominance, pulling off a stunning glove save on Cody Donaghey and making another crucial stop against Joey Martin.
The Giants were inches from a fifth goal when Josh Roach’s blue-line shot struck the crossbar and Ben Lake hit the post on an odd-man rush.
Third Period: Giants Shut It Down, Whistle Seals the Shutout
Whistle continued his heroics in the final 20 minutes, stopping a Ryan Barrow redirect early before denying Riley Brandt and Gleason Fournier in quick succession.
Cardiff pressed for a consolation goal, but Zach O’Brien was robbed on a breakaway, as Whistle capped off his 37-save shutout in spectacular style.
As the final buzzer sounded, the SSE Arena erupted, celebrating a historic night for the Belfast Giants as they lifted yet another Challenge Cup trophy.
A Night to Remember for the Giants and Belfast Fans
This emphatic 4-0 victory over the Cardiff Devils cements the Belfast Giants’ dominance in the Challenge Cup, lifting the trophy for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
With Whistle’s shutout performance, a clinical attacking display, and rock-solid defense, this was a true team performance that Giants fans will never forget.
