The Stena Line Belfast Giants made it back-to-back weekend home wins with a 4-2 win on Saturday over the Braehead Clan. Steve Saviano’s late powerplay strike and an empty net goal from Matt Towe claimed the two points for Belfast following Friday’s 7-2 home win against Edinburgh.

The Giants remain in second place with 41 points from 30 games – four points behind the Cardiff Devils who have 45 points from 29 games.

Opening Period Stalemate In Belfast

The opening 20 minutes of action saw both netminders, Belfast’s Whistle and Nie from Braehead, keep their respective sides in the game with a string of impressive saves with the score tied 0-0 after the first period.

Game Comes To Life In Middle Period

It was Jacob Doty who started the scoring as the Braehead forward posted his eleventh goal of the season with a back post finish at 26:16, assisted by Cameron Burt and Brendan Brooks.

After 26 minutes without a goal, the game produced two in as many minutes when Blair Riley found the net, assisted by David Rutherford and Darcy Murphy, at 28:36.

However, the visitors got another go-ahead goal to lead after two periods when Tyler Shattock, assisted by Lanson Oslanski and Brendan Brooks, scored at 36:29.

Brilliant Belfast In Third Period Treble

Spiro Goulakos brought the Giants level again with an impressive strike at 46:34, assisted by Jonathan Ferland, as his cannon of a slapshot ripped into the Braehead net.

The decisive goal came with little over three minutes remaining as Steve Saviano struck on the powerplay, assisted by Blair Riley and David Rutherford, to edge the hosts into a 3-2 lead.

Matt Towe made sure of the home victory when he stepped out of the penalty box after an expires penalty and finished into the empty net at 59:48.
