Punk Doco to Slay Belfast Film Festival

A one-off showing of “Outcasts by Choice” as part of this year’s Belfast Film Festival will celebrate the 40th anniversary of punk and follow The Outcasts, Belfast’s original punk sons, as they recently went back on the road.

The documentary showcases the band’s recent tour across Europe as they continue to bring the halcyon sound of days not forgotten to their fans, or ‘Locusts’, and will premiere at the Strand Arts Centre on Friday, April 22nd at 8:15pm.

Belfast’s own legendary punk outfit was formed in 1977 when three brothers and a friend rejected the status quo and offered a “night off from the Troubles” for anyone who wanted to let loose to a unique sound that has proven a hit with music fans around the world.

Dubbed ‘the band you love to hate’ by the local press due to their bad boy image and loutish behaviour, the band were pivotal in the development of the new youth movement happening in the city throughout the late 70s.

Lead singer and bassist, Greg Cowan, said:

“When we formed, Belfast was a dark place and The Outcasts was all about bringing communities together to celebrate a love of punk and for everyone to let their hair down with not a care in the world. We are delighted that are latest tour has been chronicled so well and we look forward to bringing it to the film festival for any music fan to enjoy.”

Michele Devlin, Director of the Belfast Film Festival, said:

“Outcasts by Choice is an exciting and one-off experience for both film and music fans as it follows a band that were game changers for the Belfast music scene in the late 70s. Their recent European tour proved they still have the support, and the stamina, to keep filling venues and we look forward to having a full theatre, as this is one not to be missed as part of this year’s Festival.”

Tickets are available online at www.belfastfilmfestival.org, in person at Visit Belfast, 9 Donegall Square North, or by calling the Box Office on 02890 246609.
