Your hearing is something that plays a significant role in your life. It’s often one of those things people take for granted and don’t give much thought to unless they experience issues. But did you know there are steps you can take to help you protect and care for your hearing? Some of these can be more important with age, but hearing should always be a top priority at any stage in life.
Always Protect Your Ears from Loud Noises
One of the most basic tips that anyone can and should follow is to protect your ears if exposed to loud noises. You can find earmuffs or earplugs that do a great job at muffling and blocking out sound in your personal life or at work. For those who enjoy listening to music, be sure not to crank the volume too loud no matter how tempting it may seem. Continuous exposure to loud noises and sounds can lead to ear damage and hearing loss.
A Hearing Test Can Be Very Helpful
It’s easy to assume your hearing is fine and that there are no issues, but unless you have a professional hearing test performed – you won’t know for sure. Hearing tests are a great way to spot potential issues and address them so that they don’t get any worse. As you age, regular hearing tests will beeven more important.
Don’t Allow for Moisture Buildup
Here’s a red flag you may not be aware of. Did you know if you allow excess moisture to build in your ear it can cause bacteria to grow? This can lead to an ear infection, and if it gets bad enough or is recurring – you risk your hearing health.
It is recommended any time you get water in your ears that you gently tilt your head so that the water can flow out, and then dab the outside rim of your ear gently with a towel.
Never Use Cotton Buds in Your Ears
If you’ve ever reached for a cotton bud to clean your ears you could be putting your hearing health at risk. Sticking objects into the ear, including cotton buds, can lead to ear damage, a perforated eardrum and even permanent hearing loss.
Be Mindful of Earwax Buildup
It’s also important you be mindful of earwax buildup, making sure you don’t allow it to get out of hand. While it’s true that ears are generally self-cleaning and there is no need for you to take any specific steps, sometimes a little help is needed. Some people are more prone to earwax buildup, so they will need to be more aware of the signs. If earwax buildup is significant enough, it becomes quite thick and hard and can result in temporary hearing loss.
Earwax removal can be done using eardrops at home, or you can get instant and pain-free results from a clinic like Hear Clear that uses microsuction. As noted above, you never want to use a cotton bud, as these can be incredibly dangerous.
All of these tips will allow you to prioritise your ear health so that you have many years of excellent hearing to look forward to.
