The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland may only have a combined population of some 6.5 million, but you wouldn’t know it just by looking at the sporting pedigree. The Irish have produced plenty of iconic sports stars over the years, including Roy Keane, Brian O’Driscoll, Conor McGregor, Rory McIlroy, and Ruby Walsh. While those stars have found success on an international scale, they made their name in Ireland, often in the country’s leading sports venues.
Is there anything better than attending a large sporting event at an Irish venue? We may be biased, but we certainly don’t think so! In this blog, we will run through some of the most iconic venues in the Republic and Northern Ireland. Whether you’re a native to Ireland or just visiting, if you’re a sports fan, make sure you put these venues on your bucket list!
The Down Royal Racecourse
Any sporting venue that’s been around for more than 330 years must be doing something right. The Down Royal Racecourse has been hosting horse races since 1685 and continues to be a popular hangout spot for local horse racing fans.
The course, located eight miles south Belfast, makes for an easy day trip for visitors to the capital and hosts both National Hunt and Flat races year-round. To get the most from your day at the races, it’s best to book tickets in a hospitality suite and read up on expert horse racing tips, so you know which horses to follow. The two biggest races of the year are the Champion Chase and Ulster Chase, which occur in mid-Autumn and June, respectively.
Croke Park
Croke Park isn’t only one of Ireland’s best venues; it’s one of the best in Europe. Able to accommodate more than 82,000 fans on matchday, the stadium has been used to host the Special Olympics and national rugby and football matches in the past. It’s most well-known for hosting the Ireland Gaelic Games, including huge Gaelic football and hurling events.
The venue is so iconic that even non-sports fans will find plenty to love about Croke Park — it’s an Irish institution as much as anything else. Over the years, international superstars such as Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce, Coldplay, and, of course, U2 have all performed there.
Pairc Ui Chaoimh
Located in Cork, Pairc Ui Chaoimh was renovated in 2017 and now offers state of the art facilities for sporting events, concerts, and more. It is predominately used to host hurling and Gaelic football events, but there have also been some high-profile football matches played at the ground and would have been used as a venue for the 2023 World Cup had Ireland been chosen to host (it went to France).
While there are bigger stadiums in Ireland, that’s not necessarily a mark against Pairc Ui Chaoimh; the slightly more intimate feel of the stadium is part of its charm. And if you’re passionate about GAA, then you can even buy a ten-year ticket to gain access to all the events!
Windsor Park
We can’t complete a list of the best sporting venues in Ireland without mentioning Windsor Park! Home to the Northern Ireland football team, it has provided the scene for many iconic moments over the years. George Best scored three of his nine goals for Northern Ireland in one match at this stadium. David Healy scored a famous goal to beat England 1 – 0. And who could forget the 3 -1 victory over Greece that secured passage to Euro 2016? There’s nothing like being in Windsor Park on a night when the stars align and Northern Ireland claims a famous victory!
