Runner to raise £1,000 per mile at London Marathon
HE has planned celebrity weddings and organised some of Ireland’s most prestigious public events, but renowned Belfast event planner Leo Callow is preparing to face his toughest challenge yet.
This April, he will run the 26-mile London Marathon where he hopes to raise £26,000, or £1,000 per mile, in aid of the The Lord’s Taverners youth charity.
It will be his 26th marathon!!
Mr Callow said; “I had retired when I turned 50, but after a chance meeting with an old friend, who planned to run the marathon aged 70, I felt compelled to bring the running shoes out of retirement and give him some company on the way round.”
“This will be my 26th marathon but I’m more than a little rusty. I’ve started training and as it’s for such a fantastic cause it’s been easy to get motivated. Any sponsorship is welcome so I can reach my goal and give children throughout Northern Ireland a better chance in life.”
The youth charity, which aims to give disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK better prospects through sport, is one Mr. Callow has worked closely with for many years raising £3 million for both it and other foundations.
Leo Callow is best known for organising the Waterloo Ball, one of Ireland’s largest charity fundraising events held every two years. Run on behalf of the Lord’s Taverners, more than 10,000 have attended over the years and raised more than £1million.
“I haven’t put my running shoes on in six years and some hard miles lie ahead before I’m ready for the London Marathon, but it’ll be worth it,” he said.
