five phone apps
Take a look at your phone and ask yourself one simple question: if you were allowed to keep only five apps, which ones would survive?
For me, the answer is Instagram, WhatsApp, Reddit, ChatGPT and Spotify.
It is an interesting mix when you think about it. One app keeps me connected with friends and family, another helps with work and creativity, one provides music, one offers endless conversations and opinions, and Instagram somehow manages to combine almost everything.
My five favourite phone apps
1. Instagram
Instagram would probably be the hardest one for me to delete.
It is entertainment, news, inspiration and business all in one place. Running LoveBelfast means Instagram is also where we discover stories, share what is happening across the city and connect with our audience.
Globally, it remains one of the biggest apps on the planet. It is particularly popular with younger adults and ranks among the world’s most actively used social platforms.
2. WhatsApp
WhatsApp is the app I probably open most often without even thinking about it.
Family messages, work conversations, photographs, voice notes and group chats all live there. It is no longer simply a messaging service; for many of us, it has replaced phone calls, emails and even face-to-face conversations.
Current global research ranks WhatsApp as the world’s favourite social platform, chosen by 17.4% of adult social media users. It is also opened more frequently than any other major social app, with the typical Android user checking it more than 20 times a day.
3. Reddit
Reddit can be informative, hilarious, argumentative and occasionally completely chaotic—but that is part of its appeal.
Whatever you are interested in, there is almost certainly a community discussing it. Reddit often provides honest opinions and first-hand experiences that are difficult to find through a normal internet search.
It is smaller than Instagram and WhatsApp, but it is growing rapidly. Reddit reported 130.3 million daily active users and more than 514 million weekly active users during the second quarter of 2026.
4. ChatGPT
ChatGPT has quickly become one of the most useful apps on my phone.
I use it to develop ideas, improve writing, research subjects, plan content and work through problems. It does not replace human creativity or judgement, but it can provide an excellent starting point—and often saves a great deal of time.
Its rise has been extraordinary. OpenAI’s most recently published figure cited by DataReportal puts ChatGPT at around 900 million weekly active users, making it one of the fastest-growing consumer technologies ever released.
5. Spotify
Spotify is the soundtrack to everything: driving, working, cooking, exercising or simply switching off.
There is something remarkable about carrying millions of songs, podcasts and audiobooks in your pocket. Spotify says its catalogue now contains more than 100 million tracks, seven million podcast titles and 700,000 audiobooks in selected markets.
Which app is the most popular of all time?
There is no single official answer, because “most popular” can mean several different things:
- The greatest number of downloads
- The largest number of active users
- The most time spent in the app
- The app opened most frequently
- The highest consumer spending
Pre-installed apps such as YouTube and Google Maps also make direct comparisons difficult because millions of people receive them automatically with their phones.
The best-known historical study was produced by mobile analytics company App Annie. Its analysis of the 2010s named Facebook as the decade’s most downloaded app, followed by Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.
More recent mobile-use data paints a slightly different picture. YouTube currently leads the world’s social apps by active mobile users, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram. YouTube also accounts for the greatest total time spent, while WhatsApp wins for frequency of use.
So, depending on how you measure it:
- Historical download champion: Facebook
- Largest active mobile audience today: YouTube
- Most frequently opened major social app: WhatsApp
- Global favourite among social media users: WhatsApp
- Personal winner: Instagram
Our phones say more about us than we probably realise. The five apps we choose reveal how we communicate, relax, work and understand the world.
Now it is your turn: what are the five apps on your phone that you couldn’t live without?
