A murder investigation is under way in Waterford after a fire killed a couple and two of their children at their home on Birch Avenue in the Birchwood estate.
Two other children from the family are receiving treatment for critical injuries at Children’s Health Ireland in Crumlin. Gardaí believe the house was deliberately set alight.
Witness appeal focuses on the hour around the fire
Investigators want to hear from anyone near Birch Avenue or Birchwood between 4.30am and 5.30am on Tuesday, 13 October. Drivers who travelled through the estate or adjoining roads during that period are asked to provide any dashcam recordings or images.
Information can be passed to Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
Forensic examination under way
Emergency services responded shortly after 5am. The property is now a crime scene, with the Garda Technical Bureau examining it.
Post-mortem examinations will take place at University Hospital Waterford. The inquiry is being led from Waterford Garda Station, with support from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Family liaison officers are supporting the bereaved relatives.
Support available for the community
Waterford City and County Council has opened a community support hub at Butler Community Centre in St John’s Park for people affected by the fire. Professional support, refreshments and facilities are available.
In a joint statement, Mayor of Waterford Liam Brazil and Metropolitan District Mayor Lola O’Sullivan expressed their sympathy to the family and loved ones of those who died. They also acknowledged the emergency crews who attended the scene.
The mayors encouraged neighbours and friends to support one another and asked the public to allow Gardaí the time and space to investigate.
