Belfast Grand Central is getting a proper soundtrack. On Tuesday 22 September, the Ulster Orchestra will take over the station floor for a free 20-minute live set at 4pm — no tickets, no booking, just turn up and listen.
It’s part of Translink’s Sounds at Saltwater programme and closes out this year’s Summer at Saltwater run beside the station. Commuters, passengers and anyone killing time before a bus or train get a chance to hear the city’s orchestra in one of Belfast’s busiest public spaces.
The timing matters. The Grand Central gig lands just days before the Ulster Orchestra opens its 60th anniversary season at the Ulster Hall under new Chief Conductor Anna Handler. Think of it as a soft hello before the formal season kick-off — and a way to catch people who might never buy an Ulster Hall ticket.
Who, where, when
What: Sounds at Saltwater — Ulster Orchestra live
Where: Belfast Grand Central Station
When: Tuesday 22 September 2026, 4pm
Length: About 20 minutes
Tickets: Free — no booking required
Why they’re doing it
Translink Group Chief Executive Gerard Carlin said Grand Central is “a gateway to the city” and that bringing orchestral music into the station shows what Saltwater Square and the station can do for Belfast’s cultural life, as well as supporting the Orchestra’s 60th anniversary.
Ulster Orchestra CEO Auveen Sands said the set celebrates the opening week of the anniversary concert series and introduces Anna Handler: “Performing in a busy public space like this gives us the chance to connect with people who may not normally encounter an orchestra, and to share the experience of live music in a setting that is part of everyday life.”
Saltwater Square has already hosted film, heritage, arts and community events since opening. This free station performance is the summer programme’s closing flourish — and a useful teaser if you’re building an autumn diary from our September what’s-on guide. That guide already flags the Orchestra’s bigger Ulster Hall night later in the month (Beethoven’s Ode to Joy on 25 September).
If you want the Orchestra in a full concert hall rather than a concourse, they’ve also been on LoveBelfast with Sigur Rós at the Waterfront — and our Belfast concerts guide covers how to book the city’s main rooms safely.
For now, the brief is simple: be at Grand Central for 4pm on Tuesday 22 September. Stay for twenty minutes. It’s free.
