Commuters got more than a timetable update at Belfast Grand Central Station on Tuesday 22 September 2026. For the first time, the entire Ulster Orchestra filled the main concourse — a free twenty-minute set stretching from Beethoven to Mozart, played where passengers usually check platforms and grab coffee.
People stopped. Bags stayed put. For a short stretch of the afternoon, the city’s busiest transport hall sounded like a concert venue.

The performance was part of Translink’s Sounds at Saltwater programme and closed out Summer at Saltwater 2026 beside the station at Saltwater Square. It also landed in the opening week of the Ulster Orchestra’s 60th anniversary season under new Chief Conductor Anna Handler, with the season centred on the Ulster Hall.
Summer at Saltwater has been running since June. Screenings at Saltwater brought free outdoor cinema to the square; Stories at Saltwater offered guided walking tours of the art, heritage and communities around the station. Sounds at Saltwater put live music into that same public space — and this orchestra set was the closing flourish.
Grand Central and Saltwater Square are still finding their cultural rhythm as well as their travel one. A full symphony orchestra in the concourse is a clear signal of that ambition: culture meeting everyday Belfast, not tucked behind a ticket barrier.

Twenty minutes, no ticket, Beethoven to Mozart under the concourse roof — a small Belfast cultural moment that turned a transit hall into a listening room.
