TITANIC MARITIME FESTIVAL

A pop-up cinema experience on Belfast’s historic slipways has been added to this year’s Titanic Maritime Festival’s line-up.

The unique outdoor cinema, courtesy of Titanic Belfast and Titanic Foundation, is set to be one of the festival’s highlights, and will show seven family favourites, including Cinemagic’s Grace and Goliath, Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, The Goonies, Free Willy, The Little Mermaid and the Muppets Treasure Island.

Over the three days, the pop-up cinema will extend the festival into the early evening. There will be 200 free spaces at each film, which will be offered on a first come, first served basis, with attendees encouraged to bring a picnic blanket or deck chair to sit on.

At each pop-up event, viewers can explore skills from the past in the traditional maritime village where there will be demonstrations from ropemakers, linen weavers, boat building and riveters. Children can also learn STEM skills from industry experts and take part in a giant bridge building activity will be set up by the Institute of Civil Engineering.

Laura Cowan, head of revenue and product development at Titanic Belfast commented:

“We are delighted to be working with Titanic Foundation again this year to add more to the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival. This year’s festival programme has everything from Tall Ships to naval vessels, fun activities, along with an array of performers, musicians, street food and now a pop-up outdoor cinema, extending the family fun into the early evening. If you haven’t yet explored the Maritime Mile and Titanic Quarter, there has never been a better time.”

Grace and Goliath, which is anticipated to be one of the most popular films at the pop-up cinema experience, is the second feature film produced by Cinemagic and 50 aspiring young film trainees from Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Los Angeles. It has received widespread acclaim at special screenings in Belfast, Dublin, London, New York, Los Angeles and Boston.

Joan Burney Keatings MBE, CEO of Cinemagic, said:

“Cinemagic is proud to present a screening of Grace and Goliath at the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival. It will be a brilliant opportunity for new audiences to see our second home-grown feature film which stars well-known Northern Ireland faces and includes many Northern Ireland locations and key tourist attractions.

“We hope that visitors to the festival will enjoy seeing the wealth of talent and creativity both behind the camera and on screen and it promises to be a real fun-filled treat for all ages. We are extremely proud of everyone involved in this film and we are especially delighted that it is screening in Belfast again after its world premiere here last October.”

The Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival is delivered by Belfast City Council in partnership with Titanic Foundation with support from Tourism Northern Ireland, Belfast Harbour Commissioners, Titanic Belfast and Titanic partners.  This year the three day event aims to attract over 100,000 visitors to Belfast’s iconic heritage waterfront throughout the day and into the evening.
