Following the huge success of the Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza being held here in May 2014, it was today announced that Northern Ireland will host a major cycling legacy event for the next three years.
The first Northern Ireland Gran Fondo, to be run by Giro d’Italia organisers RCS, will be held in June 2015. The event will be a sportive aimed at amateur cyclists across the world who travel to the host country to participate.
Gran Fondo events take place throughout Europe and the rest of the world but are limited in number in an effort to keep the events unique.
Two race routes have been scoped and provisionally recommended by the organisers, preceded by cycling activities across Northern Ireland on the day before the main event. Both routes, one 177 kilometres and the other 59 kilometres, commence and finish at the iconic Titanic Belfast.
The legacy project from the 2014 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza (Big Start) in Armagh, Belfast and Dublin earlier this year invites cyclists of all ages and levels to participate in a challenging ride, with an expo and Italian themed pasta party adding to the festival atmosphere. Watch this space!
