The Stena Line Belfast Giants fell by a scoreline of 5-1 on Sunday evening at the Odyssey Arena, with last seasons EIHL top goalscorer Guillaume Doucet netting a hat trick for the visiting Nottingham Panthers.
An end to end first period finished scoreless with the Panthers heavily outshooting the Giants by a tall of 18-5. The deadlock was broken just after the midway point in the second period as Guillaume Doucet redirected a shot from defence man Cody Wild to give the Panthers a powerplay goal and the opening score.
The Giants got back on level terms under a minute later as Craig Peacock slammed home his 23rd of the season, latching onto a loose puck and lighting the lamp behind Mattias Modig.
The score remained 1-1 going into the final period but a Panthers surge in the final 20 minutes blew the game wide open. With the Giants on the powerplay Doucet added his second of the evening and 15th of the season with a shorthanded tally which would turn out to be the game winning goal.
Greg Jacina then made it 3-1 with a powerplay strike at 46.11 before Doucet rounded off his hat trick with another shorthanded tall to extend the lead to 4-1, leaving Cody Wild to complete the scoring, tallying the 5th goal with 2 minutes remaining in the game.
The Giants are back in action at home on Friday evening when they take on the Coventry Blaze in their final regular season home game. Ticket are available online at Ticketmaster or by calling the Odyssey Arena Box Office on 028 9073 9074.
