Review: The Addams Family Musical at Grand Opera House – it really is a scream!

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and they’ve moved in to Belfast’s Grand Opera House. The Addams Family has been delighting fans with their ookiness since appearing in cartoon form in The New Yorker magazine way back in 1938. Since then they have graced television and film screens, and now they come to the Grand Opera House stage in The Addams Family The Musical Comedy.

The story centres around daughter Wednesday Addams, growing up and *gasp* falling in love with Lucas, a positively normal young lad. Wednesday and Lucas decide to get their respective families together for dinner, and when these two very different clans clash, hilarity ensues.

Die hard fans may have a hard time buying Wednesday being in love, singing to birds, even smiling. It’s very different from the Wednesday some of us have come to know and love. However, Carrie Hope Fletcher, who plays the pig-tailed beauty, brings a certain charm to the character and you end up rooting for her as she comes of age, so to speak.

Samantha Womack and Cameron Blakely play the red-hot duo of Morticia and Gomez. The chemisty is spot on and yes, they tango! One of many well choreographed scenes that make the entire show a delight to watch. The set and costumes are simply stunning and the musical numbers are very entertaining.

Not to mention all the laughs! From Uncle Fester’s love affair with the moon, to Lurch’s painfully slow stroll, Pugsley’s attempt to act “normal”, and Grandma’s loss of control over her bodily functions, it really is a scream! The Addams Family The Musical Comedy runs through Saturday 7 October.
