Belfast Giants 6–0 Fife Flyers

The Belfast Giants completed an impressive opening weekend at The O2 Belfast with a commanding 6–0 victory over the Fife Flyers on Sunday.

Scott Conway struck twice, while JJ Piccinich, Jaeden Martin, Cedric Gaudet and Cole Shudra also found the net as Adam Keefe’s side followed Saturday night’s emphatic win over Dundee Stars with another dominant display.

At the other end of the ice, Jake Kupsky turned away everything Fife could produce to secure the Giants’ first shutout of the season and cap an excellent defensive weekend for the home side.

First period: Giants make a flying start

Piccinich immediately threatened to continue where he had left off the previous evening, but his early effort slid narrowly wide of the post.

He was involved in the opening goal moments later, however. Piccinich and Mike Lee combined neatly before Conway applied the finish at 4:10 to put Belfast ahead.

Morten Jensen then tested Fife netminder Dominik Groh with two quick attempts, seeing one saved before sending the next over the crossbar.

The Flyers’ first clear opportunity arrived when Michael Drabek broke away, only to be denied by Kupsky. Belfast soon punished that missed chance as Piccinich unleashed a clinical finish at 7:11, knocking the water bottle from the top of Groh’s net to double the advantage.

Jensen continued to cause problems, with Groh stopping both his initial attempt and Nicolas Guay’s effort from the rebound. Fife responded with a spell of pressure, but Kupsky stood firm against Victor Bjorkung and Chase Dubois.

Chances for Logan Cockerill and Drabek followed at opposite ends before the period closed with the Giants holding a deserved 2–0 lead.

Second period: Conway doubles up before Martin’s first in teal

Reece Kelly almost gave the visitors a route back into the contest early in the second period, but Kupsky reacted well to tip his shot away.

Garet Hunt was then handed a holding penalty. Despite opportunities for Conway and Piccinich on the resulting power play, the Flyers successfully killed it off.

Conway would not be denied for long. After having an earlier effort tipped over, the forward got a touch on David Goodwin’s goal-bound shot at 30:03 to claim his second of the night and fourth of the season.

Bjorkung forced another stop from Kupsky before Lucas Chard fired the rebound wide. A flurry of penalties for both teams then interrupted the rhythm of the game, with clear chances becoming harder to find. Kaleb Pearson sent one effort over, while Hunt saw another gathered by Kupsky.

Belfast added a fourth at 38:30 when a loose puck broke kindly for Jaeden Martin, who fired into the roof of the net. It was the Florida-born defenceman’s first goal in teal and gave the hosts a commanding advantage heading into the second intermission.

Third period: Giants complete the rout

Patrick Guay began the final period determined to add his name to the scoresheet, but he was denied on several occasions. Pearson also went close as Belfast kept the pressure on.

Further penalties for both sides made it another stop-start spell, but the Giants capitalised on the power play at 54:59. Cedric Gaudet positioned himself in front of the net and redirected Conway’s shot beyond Groh to make it 5–0.

Fife continued to battle and came within inches of ending Kupsky’s shutout when Mika Partanen struck the post.

The Giants remained hungry for more. Lee went close before Shudra added the sixth at 58:29, scoring for the second successive night and continuing his encouraging start to life in Belfast.

Kupsky protected his clean sheet through the closing moments, ensuring the Giants ended their first home weekend of the campaign with six goals, a shutout and another convincing victory.
