SPAR Northern Ireland is mixing together the perfect ingredients to produce a huge Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party this Saturday, 24th June.

The annual event, which encourages people to hold a tea party in aid of the palliative care charity, and takes place across the UK, will be held in over 80 SPAR stores across Northern Ireland.

Shoppers across the country can pop in to their local store and donate in exchange for a cup of tea and a bun or a slice of cake.

The tea parties mark the first fundraising event for Marie Curie in Northern Ireland since SPAR announced their new charity partnership with the organisation.

The money raised will help Marie Curie Nurses care for people living with a terminal illness in their own homes and the charity’s hospices, and every penny counts:

£20 pays for an hour of nursing care for a person living with a terminal illness in their own home
£70 pays for two slide sheets – essential equipment used by Marie Curie nurses to move someone living with a terminal illness safely
£180 pays for a Marie Curie nurse to look after someone with a terminal illness for a full nine-hour shift through the night

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at the Henderson Group, owners of the SPAR franchise in Northern Ireland says; “The Blooming Great Tea Party event is a fantastic initiative set up by Marie Curie, and we’re delighted to hold a NI-wide event through our network of retailers.

“We have a family of staff and retailers who are passionate about raising money for charity and helping their local communities, so we are looking forward to the 24th being a huge success and raising vital funds for Marie Curie here in Northern Ireland.”

Conor O’Kane, Senior Partnership Manager (NI & Scot) commented; “Marie Curie is excited to be the charity partner of SPAR NI. We are very impressed and delighted by how quickly SPAR NI are up and running with a range of fundraising activities. Marie Curie is grateful to the 80+ SPAR stores across Northern Ireland that are hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party.

“We look forward to a long and successful SPAR NI partnership raising funds for vital care and support for those people living with terminal illness and their families.”

The Blooming Great Tea Party events will take place from 23 – 25 June throughout the UK, and holding one is a piece of cake.

SPAR has also created a baking playlist dedicated to the Blooming Great Tea Party on their YouTube channel, where budding bakers can try their hand and follow along with some video recipes, while the SPAR NI website holds a fantastic range of bakes to try at home.

Bronagh concluded; “Our shoppers are some of the best in the country, and when we hold initiatives like this, they even bring some buns, cakes and traybakes for everyone to enjoy so we hope our recipes help inspire even the most amateur of bakers ahead of the Blooming Great Tea Party.”

At SPAR Lagan Valley in Lisburn*, Ibe Sesay from Q Radio will have the Q Superbus on site from 10am – 2pm, interacting with shoppers and interviewing Marie Curie nurses and those who have been helped by the charity to encourage more funds are donated. No doubt Ibe will also be putting the kettle on to help make the perfect brew!
