It was a quick return to the ice for the Stena Line Belfast Giants following their defeat to the Edinburgh Capitals the previous evening. Despite goals from Craig Peacock and Nathan Robinson, the Giants were trailing 4-2 going into the final period, but huge goals from Calvin Elfring and Peacock again saw them equalise and take the game to overtime. However, Cullen Eddy struck after just one minute to leave the home team with just one point from the weekend.
In a first period that saw 21 hits between the two teams, nobody could be in any doubt there would be no love lost tonight. At just 6:22 the visitors made the first real impact when Colton Fretter took advantage of a Giants line change to easily go 1-on-1 with Chubak and score. Soon after, the Steelers top scorer Michael Forney scored on the powerplay to double Sheffield’s lead. The Giants came up with an almost immediate response when Craig Peacock scored at 11:58 to halve the deficit. However, the Steelers weren’t quite finished there and at18:42 ex-Giant Robert Dowd regained that two-goal lead for the visitors.
The second period was somewhat quieter on the goal front but the Steelers capitalised on another of their many powerplays with a second of the night from Fretter. However, Nathan Robinson scored his third in two nights at 33:51 when he went 1-on-1 with Geoff Woodhouse, finishing top shelf to again leave the home team chasing only two goals.
Home fans had much to get excited about in the final twenty, with a goal from Calvin Elfring following some puck-on-a-string play from Robinson causing them to erupt for the remainder of the play. This worked in the Giants favour and Craig Peacock scored his second of the night at 53:41 to take us to 4-on-4 hockey in overtime.
As expected this produced quick end-to-end hockey but after just 1:09 Cullen Eddy scored to send the Steelers home with the win.
Final Score: Stena Line Belfast Giants 4-5 Sheffield Steelers
