September in Belfast doesn’t ease in — it stacks the diary. Arena nights, Lyric and the Opera House, Waterfront bills, Giants on the ice, Ulster at Affidea, Blues Saturdays, Hungary at Windsor, and Culture Night when the whole city opens its doors for free.
This is the LoveBelfast ultimate round-up for the rest of September 2026: the big rooms, the proper theatre, the ice and the rugby, Premiership Saturdays, and that one free Friday that turns Belfast into a map you can walk. We have checked primary calendars where we can. If a price or support act is not published, we say so — we do not invent line-ups.
Venue name check: the old SSE Arena / Odyssey arena is now The O2 Belfast (naming rights from July 2026). Ulster’s home ground is Affidea Stadium (Ravenhill / former Kingspan). Always use the live venue name on the ticket page.
Need free daytime fillers between ticketed nights? Keep our free things to do in Belfast guide open beside this list. Visiting and still picking a base? Best area to stay in Belfast is the neighbourhood-first answer — Titanic Quarter if you are Arena-bound.
Music & The O2 Belfast
Queens Quay does not do quiet Septembers. The city’s biggest indoor room is busy — tattoo drums, ABBA choruses, and a podcast night that somehow also involves B*Witched. Book via theo2belfast.com / Ticketmaster.
Belfast International Tattoo — Fri 4 & Sat 5 September
Massed pipes, drums, dancers and international acts at The O2 Belfast — the kind of night where the floor vibrates before the first tune lands. Confirmed shows include Fri 4 evening (doors 6pm / show 7:30pm), Sat 5 matinee (doors 12:30pm / show 2pm) and Sat 5 evening (doors 6:30pm / show 8pm). Early confirmed acts include the Julianna Unicyclists; more performers TBA on the venue page. Prices: check Ticketmaster — service charge and facility fee apply. Babes-in-arms policy as published by the venue.
Mamma Mia! — Wed 9–Sat 12 September
The ABBA smash hits The O2 for a short Belfast run only. Evenings and an extra matinee are on sale; doors typically open one hour before. Age: 5+; under-14s with an adult; everyone needs a ticket. Prices: check the venue — facility/service fees apply. Greek-island energy indoors on Queens Quay — Dancing Queen in a Belfast accent somehow still works.
The Girls Groupchat Podcast Live — Fri 18 September
Diona Doherty, Jordan Arnold, Shannon Mitchell and Olivia McVeigh bring the live show to The O2, with special guests B*Witched. Doors listed 6:30pm (subject to change). Under-14s with an adult (18+). Same calendar day as Culture Night — pick your lane, or do the free city crawl early and the Arena later. Trying to do both at full tilt is how you end up eating chips at midnight and calling it a plan.
Note: Bailey Zimmerman played Waterfront on Tue 1 September (now past as of this guide). Westlife, Niall Horan, Kevin Bridges and other arena names appear on aggregate tour calendars with wide date ranges — only trust The O2 Belfast event page for a confirmed Belfast night in September; we are not listing unconfirmed Sep dates here.
Theatre — Lyric Theatre Belfast
On the Lagan at Ridgeway Street, the Lyric is where September gets personal — comedy with teeth, a Guildford Four story that sold out once already, and a studio hour that will not stay polite. lyrictheatre.co.uk.
Nice Lady — Fri 4 & Sat 5 September, 19:30
Teresa Livingstone’s comedy-with-songs on the Main Stage. £16–£28. Suitable 16+. Strong language warning. Stand-up meets piano and the joy of finally not being “nice” — which, if you have ever been told to smile more, feels like a public service.
The Life and Times of Paddy Armstrong — Thu 10–Sun 13 September
Wooden Bridge Productions / Don Wycherley as Paddy Armstrong — back after a sold-out Lyric run, and rightly so. Main Stage; times include 19:30 evenings and 14:30 weekend matinees. £16–£36. Suitable 14+. Inspired by the Guildford Four memoir Life After Life. Heavy history, sharp staging — leave phone-scroll energy at the door.
Partitions — Wed 16–Sat 19 September, 20:00
Joe Nawaz in the Naughton Studio. £16–£22. Comedy, 18+. Content warnings include strong language and sudden loud noises. Personal history meets the “P” word — partitions, continents, Fermanagh folklore. Studio comedy that refuses to sit neatly in one box.
Exhibition — A House of Play: 75 Years of the Lyric Theatre
Runs through September on Lyric ticket listings (days the building is open). Free exhibition context while you are in the building — worth ten quiet minutes before the house lights drop. Confirm access on the day.
Vittorio Angelone: You Can’t Say Nothing Anymore — Sun 6 & Mon 7 September
Main Stage comedy (Sun matinee 16:00 + evenings 19:30). £16–£28. Suitable 16+. Strong language. Sold out at time of checking — watch returns on lyrictheatre.co.uk.
Also watch: Faith Healer (Brian Friel) opens in October — bookmark it if September leaves you hungry for more Lyric.
Theatre & opera — Grand Opera House
Great Victoria Street does September properly: Bizet first, then tribute nights, a Judy Garland portrait, and an Addams Family send-off that edges into Halloween. goh.co.uk.
Carmen (NI Opera) — Sat 12, Tue 15, Thu 17 & Sat 19 September
Bizet at the GOH — red dresses, danger, and an orchestra that does not mess about. Evenings 7:30pm; Sat 19 also 2:30pm matinee. Listed around £41–£65 (fees included on GOH band). Ages 12+. Running time ~3hrs with interval. Audio described Thu 17 Sep 7:30pm. Free director’s talks (must book): Tue 15 7pm and Sat 19 2pm in the Studio. Come & Sing Carmen Fri 11 September (check GOH). Pre-show deli platters available as add-ons.
The Magic of the Bee Gees — Mon 21 September
Tribute night — check GOH for times and prices. Disco hair optional; singing along is not.
In the Air Tonight — Tue 22 September
Phil Collins / Genesis-style entertainment night — confirm on GOH. That drum fill will find you whether you are ready or not.
Judy – End of the Rainbow — Wed 23–Sat 26 September
NI premiere of the Judy Garland stage portrait. £35–£52.50 (fees). Ages 10+. ~2hrs 10mins. Anna-Jane Casey as Judy. Signed performance Thu 24 Sep 7:30pm. Strong language / adult themes / loud effects warnings. Glamour and grit in the same breath — not a cosy jukebox night.
Sausage Sodas & Onion Bhajis — Fri 25 & Sat 26 September
Lata Sharma — studio/comedy listing on GOH September calendar; confirm times. Title alone deserves a seat.
The Addams Family — Tue 29 September–Sat 3 October
Ulster Operatic Company musical comedy. £30.50–£42.50 (fees). Ages 8+. ~2hrs 30mins. Signed performance Thu 1 Oct 7:30pm. Non-professional production — still a proper GOH Halloween-adjacent night, snaps and all.
Waterfront Hall & Ulster Hall
Two halls, one riverbank calendar, and a September that refuses to pick a lane — Icelandic strings one night, comedy the next, then Billy Ocean reminding everyone what a chorus is for. waterfront.co.uk lists both.
Sigur Rós with the Ulster Orchestra — Fri 4 September, Waterfront Hall
Final dates of the orchestral tour — ÁTTA plus catalogue favourites with conductor Robert Ames and a 41-piece orchestra. Tickets listed £49–£134 (+£3.25 fee). £1 per ticket to War Child via PLUS1. Pre-show: Aoibha in the bar. U14 with adult; ticket limit 6. Headphones-off music — the kind that makes the hall feel bigger than the building.
The ELO Show — Sat 5 September, Waterfront
Tribute / ELO night — limited availability flagged on venue listings; check prices on the event page. Jeff Lynne energy without needing a passport.
Chris Norman — Sun 6 September, Waterfront
Classic soft-rock night — confirm tickets on Waterfront.
Freya Ridings — Sun 6 September, Ulster Hall
Same evening, different hall — do not double-book yourself. Pick a voice and commit.
Nish Kumar — Tue 9 September, Ulster Hall
Comedy. Sharp, political, and unlikely to soothe you into an early night.
Michael Starring Ben — Tue 9 September, Waterfront Hall
Michael Jackson tribute with live band — £35–£38 (+£3.25). Under-14 with adult. Same night as Nish at Ulster Hall — pick one room.
Three’s A Shroud — Sat 12 September, Waterfront
Comedy night — confirm times/prices on Waterfront.
Billy Ocean — Mon 14 September, Waterfront Hall
Caribbean Queen / When The Going Gets Tough era hits. £70.70–£76.25 (+£3.25). U16 with adult. Monday night, full voice — Belfast knows how to do that.
Anastacia + special guests — Wed 17 September, Waterfront
£62.50 (+£3.25 fee). 18+. Hits night — I’m Outta Love energy on the Lagan.
Jane McDonald — Sat 19 & Sun 20 September, Waterfront
Living The Dream tour — 7:30pm both nights. £44.90–£65 (+£3.25). Under-14 with adult. Big heart, big notes, and a crowd that sings whether you asked them to or not.
Eric Cantona — Tue 22 September, Waterfront
Live unscripted interview with Jed Stone + live music. Silver/Gold/Platinum packages from £89–£395 on the venue page — not a match, a night with The King. Collar up optional.
Russell Howard: Don’t Tell the Algorithm — Wed 23 & Thu 24 September, Waterfront
Stand-up, 7:30pm both nights — phones down, jokes up. Check Ticketmaster / Waterfront for prices.
Ulster Orchestra: Beethoven 200 — Ode to Joy! — Fri 25 September, Ulster Hall
60th-anniversary opener: Brahms Academic Festival Overture, Britten Young Apollo, Beethoven Symphony No. 9. 19:45 (pre-concert talk 7pm). £12–£38. Youth choirs from across NI join the orchestra. If September only buys you one classical night, make it the one with a choir attached.
The Cat Laughs Comedy Festival — Fri 25 & Sat 26 September, Waterfront
Ireland’s longest-running comedy festival back in Belfast — and the bill looks greedy in the best way. Fri includes Colin Murphy, Paddy Raff, Diona Doherty, Serena Terry and more; Sat includes Colin Geddis, Emer Maguire, Susie McCabe and more (8pm). Confirm full line-up on Waterfront.
Also listed: Urzila Carlson (Ulster Hall, 22 Sep), Think Twice (24 Sep), John Garrity (25 Sep, Studio) — verify each event page before you travel.
Planning a night out after the show? Our best brunch Belfast list is the morning-after recovery map.
Sport — Ulster Rugby, Giants, football
Transfer noise from Tuesday’s Premier League window is settled — our deadline day wrap is the living-room version. Locally, September is Affidea Fridays, Giants weekends, Blues Saturdays and a Nations League Monday. Pack a scarf. Or three.

Belfast Giants — The O2 Belfast
Primary: belfastgiants.com and theo2belfast.com/belfast-giants. Challenge Cup ice on Queens Quay — loud, cold, and exactly what September evenings are for.

- Sat 19 September, 19:00 — Belfast Giants vs Dundee Stars
- Sun 20 September, 17:00 — Belfast Giants vs Fife Flyers
- Sat 26 September, 19:00 — Belfast Giants vs Fife Flyers
Away Challenge Cup dates earlier in the month (Dundee / Braehead) are listed on the Giants game centre — useful if you are road-tripping, but the Queens Quay nights are the Belfast ones. Tickets via Ticketmaster / venue.
Linfield & Irish Premiership
LoveBelfast sponsors Linfield — verified Premiership dates (kick-offs can move; check NIFL / club):
- Sat 5 September, 15:00 — Linfield v Carrick Rangers (home, Windsor Park)

- Fri 25 September, 19:45 — Coleraine v Linfield (away) — confirm KO on NIFL / linfieldfc.com
Derby noise elsewhere the same weekends (e.g. Glentoran fixtures) — East Belfast storylines are already loud after Conor McMenamin’s return to Glentoran.
Northern Ireland — UEFA Nations League
Irish FA confirmed League B Group B2 — and the Windsor night is the one locals will talk about in the pub first:
- Fri 25 September — Georgia v Northern Ireland (away, Tbilisi) — KO TBC on IFA list
- Mon 28 September, 19:45 BST — Northern Ireland v Hungary, Windsor Park
Home Nations League tickets were reported sold out on the IFA ticket page at time of checking — join the waiting list / accessible channels via irishfa.com if you are still hunting.
Culture Night & city events
Mid-month, Belfast does what it does best: opens the doors, kills the ticket price, and lets the city wander.
Culture Night Belfast — Friday 18 September, 4pm–10pm
More than 200 free, family-friendly events citywide. Theme: Be a City Explorer. Funded by Belfast City Council with Linen Quarter BID and Cathedral Quarter BID; programmed by MayWe and DaisyChain Inc. Hubs at 2 Royal Avenue and The MAC (quiet spaces). Timetable: culturenight.ie. NI’s biggest half — start/finish Ormeau Park / Ormeau Embankment. Public entry sold out; charity places may remain via belfastcitymarathon.com. - Looking ahead: City Hall Christmas Market dates for 2026 were still settling at time of writing — bookmark Belfast Christmas Market 2026 for updates.
- Concert road-trip seed: Fontaines D.C. lock two Slane nights in June 2027 — Fontaines D.C. Slane 2027 if September makes you hungry for next summer’s big grass weekend.

How to use this month like a local
- Book the scarce nights first — Sigur Rós, Carmen, Culture Night is free but plan a route; Arena musicals sell.
- Stack smart — Culture Night afternoon → early dinner → Girls Groupchat or stay outdoors until 10pm. Do not try all three.
- Sport weekends — Ulster Friday nights + Giants Saturday/Sunday + Blues Saturday is a full Belfast sport diet.
- Leave gaps — Ulster Museum, Botanic, Maritime Mile and St George’s still cost nothing at the door (free things guide).
- Re-check before you travel — KO times, support acts and prices move. Primary site beats a round-up every time.
September in Belfast is not a soft landing into autumn — it is Tattoo drums, ABBA choruses, Carmen arias, Icelandic strings, ice, rugby, a free city crawl, and a Nations League night under the Windsor lights. Pick two anchors a week, leave room for a market breakfast, and let the city do the rest.
