Rockport School marked an extraordinary milestone on Friday 11 September as pupils, families, staff and former students came together to celebrate the school’s 120th anniversary.

The Rockport120 Celebration combined sporting competition, music and memories, creating a fitting tribute to the generations of people who have shaped the school since it was founded in 1906.

Set within Rockport’s picturesque grounds on the shores of Belfast Lough, the occasion began with the school’s annual Cross Country event before moving into a relaxed afternoon of Jazz on the Lawn.

A morning of determination and school spirit

The anniversary celebrations began with plenty of energy as pupils took on Rockport’s annual Cross Country course.

Runners were encouraged around the route by staff, families and friends, creating a lively atmosphere across the school grounds. Some pupils approached the race with their sights firmly set on the finish line, while others simply enjoyed taking part in one of Rockport’s much-loved annual traditions.

Cross Country has long held an important place in school life. It encourages determination, resilience and the confidence to continue when the course becomes challenging—qualities that extend well beyond sport.

Tired legs were soon replaced by proud smiles as runners crossed the finish line to applause from those watching.

Old Rockportians make history

A particularly memorable addition to the anniversary programme was the inaugural Old Rockportians Race.

For the first time, former pupils were invited to return to familiar surroundings and compete as part of the Cross Country event. Their participation created a joyful connection between Rockport’s past and present.

Josh Eastwood made school history by winning the first Old Rockportians Race, with Christian Sims and Luke Brannigan also receiving special recognition for taking part.

The prizes were presented by Old Rockportian and former Rockport teacher Josh Reynolds, adding another meaningful connection to the school’s history.

Former pupils also returned to support the runners, reconnect with friends and share memories of their own time at Rockport.

Jazz on the Lawn

Following the morning’s sporting excitement, the celebrations continued with Jazz on the Lawn.

The favourable weather allowed families to gather outside with picnic blankets, food and drinks. Current families were joined by Old Rockportians and parents whose children are only beginning their journey with the school.

It created a warm and informal atmosphere, with different generations of the Rockport community sharing stories and enjoying the occasion together.

Music formed the heart of the afternoon. Head of Music Mel Carr created a special Songs Through the Years programme, with selections chosen to represent the different periods Rockport has experienced throughout its 120-year history.

The performances provided an ideal soundtrack to an afternoon filled with conversation, nostalgia and celebration.

Celebrating Rockport’s remarkable story

Rockport School was established by Geoffrey Bing in 1906, initially welcoming four boys, one assistant master and a matron.

Originally founded as a boys’ preparatory school, Rockport expanded considerably over the following decades. It became fully co-educational in 1967, began teaching pupils up to the age of 16 in 1998 and extended its provision to age 18 in 2015.

Today, Rockport welcomes pupils from Preschool through to Sixth Form and describes itself as Northern Ireland’s only fully independent day and boarding school. The school combines academics with sport, music, drama, outdoor learning, leadership and service.

Its coastal location in Craigavad provides pupils with access to extensive grounds, woodland and Belfast Lough. Small classes and a close-knit community also allow staff to get to know pupils individually.

More information about the school, its educational approach and its history can be found on the official About Rockport School page.

A community spanning generations

The Rockport120 Celebration reflected the important part that people have played throughout the school’s history.

Pupils brought enthusiasm and determination to the Cross Country course. Old Rockportians provided a living link to the past, while current and prospective families came together to celebrate the school’s continuing story.

From the opening race to the final notes performed on the lawn, the occasion captured the community spirit that has supported Rockport for 120 years.

It celebrated more than the passing of time. It recognised the pupils, teachers, families and former students who have carried Rockport’s character and traditions from one generation to the next.
