Revealed: Beetlejuice named the UK’s favourite Halloween film

  • Beetlejuice is the UK’s favourite monster movie ever – beating Ghostbusters, The Shining and Hush for the top spot, new research reveals.
  • Spooks and Chill looks into data behind IMDb’s list of the ultimate Halloween flicks to reveal what’s really worth watching over the spooky season.
  • Psycho is the highest-rated film featured with an IMDb score of 8.5/10, while The Nightmare Before Christmas boasts the best score for its running time.
  • It would take scary movie fans a staggering 88 hours to make their way through the top 50 films – equivalent to just under four days.

Beetlejuice has been named the UK’s must-watch monster movie this Halloween, beating out top-rated classics Psycho, Scream and Poltergeist for the top spot, new data shows.

The Spooks and Chill study looks at the search volume behind IMDb’s ‘best Halloween movies of all time’ list to reveal which frightening flicks are really worth watching over the spooky season, and which are best left alone.

The study found that most Brits believe Beetlejuice is the best scary movie, followed by Ghostbusters, The Shining and Hush. Interestingly – despite being the highest-rated on IMDb – Psycho is the nation’s seventh favourite flick.

The UK has good taste when it comes to Halloween hits as Beetlejuice holds a respectable rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb, placing it eighth overall behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and Evil Dead II when it’s critic score is measured against it’s running time.

In terms of which creepy classics should be skipped, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Evil Dead II and The Little Shop of Horrors prove the least popular around the world, while Village of the Damned and The Amityville Horror have the lowest IMDb ratings.

Given the Covid-19 restrictions set to be in place in the UK this Halloween, film fans will be pleased to hear there’s an impressive 88 hours worth of creepy content to get through across the top 50 movies alone – equivalent to just under four days, or 5,280 minutes.

Looking at the figures behind popular Halloween film franchises shows that Final Destination offers the best critical score for the overall running time, with Final Destination 2 the best flick, and Final Destination 3 holding the lowest score in the series.

For those who are able to get dressed up to mark the holiday, the top costume picks in the UK come out as Godzilla, Jigsaw and Dracula, while other global favourites include Frankenstein, Pennywise and the Gremlins.

If you’d prefer to dress up as something a little less frightening, the most popular blockbuster characters around the world include Batman, Iron Man and James Bond – but the UK seems to prefer intrepid explorers with the nation’s top pick coming out as Indiana Jones.
