Freshers week just got its annual safety nudge. The PSNI, working with Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster University, Belfast Met, Belfast City Council and SoS Bus, launched this year’s student safety campaign on Wednesday 9 September — aimed at new arrivals and returning students settling back into the city.
The pitch is straightforward: visible officers around student accommodation, practical crime-prevention advice, and a reminder that support networks exist before anyone needs them at 2am.
What the campaign covers
Officers will be out in student areas over the coming month, working with campuses and the council. Advice will also run on PSNI social channels — personal safety, looking out for each other, and respecting neighbours in shared streets. Full tips sit on the force’s student hub at psni.police.uk/student-safety.
Nightlife gets a specific mention. The Ask for Angela scheme — already in more than 400 bars and clubs across Northern Ireland — remains the discreet way to get help if a night out turns uncomfortable: ask venue staff for “Angela”.
Partners
Chief Inspector Loreen Glenn said Belfast’s student community is a priority for local policing and that the campaign is about keeping students safe while encouraging responsible behaviour. Lord Mayor Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly welcomed the joint effort with universities, accommodation providers and communities so student areas stay safe and respectful.
Queen’s Local Engagement Manager Ryan Rankin said the campaign helps students feel connected to support networks, especially those living away from home for the first time. Ulster University’s Gabrielle Smyth and Belfast Met’s Kelly McPolin both stressed wellbeing and knowing where to get help. SoS Bus CEO Micky Murray pointed to on-street early intervention when someone is vulnerable after a night out.
