The summer circus is over. After a frantic Tuesday night, the Premier League transfer window is shut — and the numbers are absurd even by modern standards.
The window closed Tuesday night (1 September) after the usual UK evening deadline. For anyone still refreshing timelines on Wednesday: the deals that landed are the deals that count. Everything else is noise until January.
And what a summer. English top-flight clubs have set a new all-time summer spending record, reported by BBC Sport at around £3.49bn, clearing last year’s mark. Deadline day alone contributed hundreds of millions more.
City’s late double — and a British record match
Manchester City owned the final hours.
Enzo Fernandez completed a move from Chelsea to City for a reported £125m — a joint British transfer record, matching what Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last summer. Confirmed as the window slammed shut, it reunites the Argentina midfielder with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.
Hours earlier, City also landed Iliman Ndiaye from Everton in a deal reported at up to £65m (widely broken as an initial £60m plus add-ons). That one helped push the league past the old spending record before Fernandez’s fee was even banked.
City’s midfield rebuild has been ruthless. Out went Rodri (to Barcelona) and Bernardo Silva (to Real Madrid at the end of his contract), among others. In came the chequebook.
Barcola already banked — second only to Isak
Not everything waited for the final night.
Bradley Barcola completed his move from PSG to Liverpool around 31 August in a package reported at up to £123m — an initial fee around £106m plus add-ons. Sky and BBC both frame it as Liverpool’s second-biggest signing behind the Isak deal.
On deadline day itself, Liverpool’s only confirmed in was teenage Genk keeper Lucca Brughmans, who signed long-term then stayed in Belgium on loan for 2026-27. Media put the package at up to a reported £30m with add-ons; Liverpool’s own statement did not list a fee.
Youth raids: Newcastle, Villa, Spurs
Elsewhere on the last day:
- Newcastle signed Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo for a reported £51m — a youth-first statement after a summer of heavy turnover.
- Aston Villa paid PSG a reported £47m for 18-year-old winger Ibrahim Mbaye, and also brought in Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.
- Tottenham took Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea (option to buy) and signed centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo permanently — a same-night London double.
- Arsenal confirmed Gabriel Jesus’s exit to Barcelona. No late attacking splash for Arteta on the day.
Hull go full chaos mode
Promoted or not, Hull City were the busiest Premier League club on the day. The Premier League’s own wrap says they made six deadline-day signings to take their summer incomings to 18. That is not a tweak. That is a rebuild with the lights still on.
What it means for Belfast living rooms
If you support anyone in red, blue, sky blue or black-and-white from this side of the Irish Sea, the board looks different overnight.
City spent like a club rewriting its spine. Liverpool stacked another nine-figure attacker before the clock even hit deadline day. Newcastle and Villa chased upside. Spurs shopped across London. Chelsea cashed a British-record-adjacent cheque and watched a late Camara replacement collapse — drama for another column.
The window is shut. The spreadsheet is not. Fees above stay reported unless clubs publish otherwise. January will come around sooner than the hangover fades.
Who won your window — and who bottled it?
