PORTRUSH has been named the top Northern Ireland childhood holiday destination of the past in a recent survey conducted by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB)

The County Antrim favourite beat off stiff competition from Newcastle and Bangor in County Down and North Coast neighbour Portstewart to win the coveted title amongst those surveyed on discovernorthernireland.com

The research was carried out as part of NITB’s Rediscover NI campaign which encouraged people to take a trip down memory lane, recalling their favourite family breaks in Northern Ireland and then revisiting the places they holidayed in as a child.

Favourite childhood holiday memories included playing in the sand dunes at the Whiterocks, flying kites on Portstewart Strand and the bouncy castle at Tyrella beach with most holidaymakers wanting to bring back the North Coast’s safari park!!!

Current holiday habits showed that while those surveyed still visit the popular spots of the North Coast and the Mournes, the cities of Belfast and Derry and the Lakeland county of Fermanagh were among the favourite current destination to holiday with your family.

The survey also revealed the most popular family activities when holidaying in Northern Ireland are walking, eating out and shopping.

Pauline Gormley, Destination PR Officer of NITB, said: “I’m not surprised that the seaside resort of Portrush came out on top as the favourite childhood holiday destination as it really does seem to hold wonderful memories for families and remains to this day a popular spot.

“It is interesting to see that both Belfast and Derry~Londonderry are now very popular for family holidays as they offer a plethora of attractions, restaurants and of course history. With the success of Titanic Belfast and the fantastic array of events taking place in this year’s UK City of Culture, both cities are emerging as top short break destinations.” she continued.

“Our Rediscover NI campaign was aimed at awakening memories of favourite childhood holiday destinations in Northern Ireland and I would encourage everyone to go out and revisit these places as well as trying somewhere new with your family today,” Pauline added.

A short break in Northern Ireland starts from £49 per room. To book a short break and find out more about Northern Ireland’s world-class attractions visit discovernorthernireland.com.
