David Nixon has taken this well-known Hans Christian Anderson’s 1837 fairytale and brought it to life with such imagination and character that it feels new and exciting. Northern Ballet’s production of The Little Mermaid. Even the most die-hard fans of the Disney annimation will be enthralled by this new interpretation. The sets and costumes are simply stunning, and the choreography is exquisite. Nixon has truly created a magical masterpiece. I can’t wait to see it again!
The stage design is deceptively simple. Two curved walls, flipped round to form two white towers. This set piece is used to create underwater backdrops, a ship’s bow, seaside caves and palace walls. The production team have done an excellent job in creating a believable and immersive world for the audience.

Abigail Prudames really captures the pain and agony Marilla undergoes as she changes from mermaid to two-legged human. Every movement, every contortion of her body expresses her pain. Particularly striking is the scene where she tries to use her new legs for the first time. The awkward, ungainly movements express both her physical pain and her reluctance to leave her watery home behind. Marilla is truly a fish out of water in the human world; she is an oddity that is unable to communicate and suffers with every faltering step she takes.

Beamish’s music has a very watery and Celtic feel to it, which is perfect for the underwater scenes in the film. The lighting is a washed out blue, and the dancers wear aqua costumes that glitter in the light. The Goldfish and jellyfish is a nice touch, and it really helps to set the scene. The underwater scenes are some of the most beautiful in the film, and Beamish’s music plays a big part in making them so special.
Northern Ballet’s The Little Mermaid is a must-see for any ballet fan. Not only is it visually stunning, but it is also full of beautiful dancing. The story is both a fantastical tale about mermaids and a heart-breaking observation of the struggle to understand and communicate with those who are different. However, the most powerful message of the ballet is ultimately about the power of love. The Little Mermaid is a great choice for a family-friendly evening out, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly magical experience.
