Every Northern Ireland Household to Receive Automatic £63 Electricity Discount

Every household in Northern Ireland is set to receive a one-off £63 reduction on its electricity costs from October 2026.

The UK Government-funded support will be delivered automatically through electricity suppliers, meaning customers will not need to complete an application form or register for the payment.

How the discount is received will depend on whether the household pays by bill or uses a pay-as-you-go meter.

How will the £63 electricity discount work?

Customers who pay their electricity through a bank payment arrangement will have £63 deducted automatically from their account or bill.

Pay-as-you-go customers will receive the same amount as additional credit when they next top up their meter.

The discount will apply to all Northern Ireland households and is not means-tested. Residents will not need to provide bank details, click a link or submit personal information to receive it.

Anyone contacted unexpectedly and asked for financial details to access the payment should be cautious, as the legitimate discount will be processed directly by electricity suppliers.

Important advice for pay-as-you-go customers

Households using pay-as-you-go electricity should avoid purchasing more than £112 of credit if they want the entire £63 discount to be added during one transaction.

Electricity meters can accept a maximum payment of £175 at a time. A £112 top-up combined with the government’s £63 contribution reaches that limit exactly.

Customers who buy more than £112 of their own credit will not lose any of the support. However, part of the £63 discount may be held back and added when they make a later top-up.

For example:

  • A customer buying £100 of electricity credit can receive the full £63 at the same time, creating a total top-up of £163.
  • A customer buying £150 of credit would exceed the meter’s £175 transaction limit once the discount is added, so the government support would need to be divided between top-ups.

Why is Northern Ireland receiving a separate payment?

Northern Ireland operates under a separately regulated electricity market, so two energy support measures being introduced in Great Britain cannot be applied here in exactly the same way.

The measures include a temporary reduction in VAT on domestic electricity and changes to levies paid by consumers.

Applying the VAT reduction directly in Northern Ireland could have required additional agreement with the European Union and potentially delayed the support. Instead, the financial benefit is being provided through a single £63 household discount.

The Department for the Economy previously confirmed that Northern Ireland’s electricity support measures would be combined into one payment for domestic customers.

Help arrives as energy costs rise

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald said the payment would offer some assistance to families as winter approaches and household energy costs increase.

The announcement comes as electricity, gas and home heating oil prices place renewed pressure on household budgets across Northern Ireland.

Consumer Council figures indicate that the cost of 500 litres of home heating oil has risen to approximately £560—more than double the amount recorded at the same point last year.

The increase has been linked to wider instability in global energy markets, including the conflict involving the United States and Iran.

Separate £100 heating oil support scheme

The electricity discount is separate from Northern Ireland’s means-tested Home Heating Oil Support Scheme.

That programme offers a £100 digital voucher to eligible households that rely on oil for heating. Unlike the electricity payment, the oil voucher is not automatic and households must submit an application.

LoveBelfast has published a full guide explaining who can apply for the £100 home heating oil voucher and how the scheme works.

What households need to do

Most households do not need to take any action to receive the £63 electricity reduction.

Customers should continue paying their bills or topping up their meters as usual. Electricity suppliers are expected to provide further information about when the credit will appear on individual accounts.

Pay-as-you-go customers who want to receive the full discount during a single transaction should remember to keep their own top-up at £112 or below.

The £63 payment will provide a welcome, if limited, reduction as families prepare for another expensive winter.
