Linfield 1–0 Cliftonville
Linfield FC secured three valuable points at Windsor Park as Ethan McGee’s second-half header brought Cliftonville’s unbeaten start to the season to an end.
The defender struck ten minutes after the interval, rising above the visiting defence to meet Adam Frizzell’s corner and steer his header into the net. It proved decisive in a competitive Belfast encounter and gave David Healy’s side consecutive league victories.
Few openings in a tight first half
Clear opportunities were limited during a cautious opening 45 minutes, with both teams enjoying spells in possession but finding it difficult to create chances.
Linfield produced the best opportunity of the half after Dane McCullough delivered a deep cross from the left. Kyle McClelland’s clearance reached Kirk Millar outside the penalty area, where the winger sent a curling half-volley towards goal. Cliftonville goalkeeper Peter Morrison reacted well, pushing it beyond his left post.
Kieran Offord then applied pressure as Morrison hesitated in possession, although the Linfield forward was unable to turn the moment into a clear sight of goal.
Linfield make their pressure count
The Blues returned after the break with greater urgency and soon found the breakthrough. Frizzell’s corner from the right was delivered into a dangerous area, allowing McGee to rise highest and power home the only goal of the contest.
Cliftonville looked for a response and Liam McStravick threatened around ten minutes later, sending a right-footed effort narrowly wide.
The visitors continued pushing as the game entered its closing stages. Joe Gormley, introduced from the bench, came close to finding the bottom corner but was unable to direct his attempt on target.
Linfield’s defence remained organised and determined throughout the late pressure, protecting the narrow advantage and recording an important clean sheet.
There was one final opportunity for the hosts in added time when Kobei Moore had the chance to make the result safe. Morrison stood firm, however, denying the Linfield substitute and keeping the deficit at one.
A positive start for the Blues
Linfield assistant coach Ross Oliver was pleased to see the team collect another three points. He described the first half as cagey, with neither side seriously testing the opposing goalkeeper, but felt the Blues began the second period strongly and deserved their goal during that improved spell.
Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton was frustrated that a set piece settled such a close contest. He felt there had been little between the teams and pointed to poor marking as the decisive error.
The result gives Linfield further momentum following back-to-back league wins. The Blues now prepare for a trip to Limavady next weekend, while Cliftonville return to Solitude to face Dungannon Swifts.
