Mary Mangan’s Titanic Possessions on Display at Titanic Belfast

Belfast has a short window on something rare: Mary Mangan’s own Titanic possessions, on public display at Titanic Belfast until 6 October.

A gold pocket watch engraved with her initials, a yellow metal linked chain with a 9ct gold clasp, and a hand-coloured portrait that once hung in her mother’s home are now in the Titanic Quarter attraction — on loan from Wiltshire auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Sons before the pieces go under the hammer in November.

The free temporary display sits with a pop-up exhibition on Mary and the Addergoole Fourteen: the neighbours, friends and relatives from Addergoole in Co Mayo who travelled to Queenstown (Cobh) to board RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage. Only three of the fourteen survived. Mary was the only one of the eleven who died whose body was recovered and identified — her personal belongings helping to confirm who she was.

Who was Mary Mangan?

Mary was a third-class passenger from Addergoole. The story Titanic Belfast is telling runs like this: she had returned to Ireland from America in early 1912 with her sister Ellen to announce her engagement. Ellen stayed. Mary headed for Queenstown with thirteen others from the village and boarded the ship in April 1912.

The pocket watch is engraved “MM” on the case and “M. Mangan” inside. It was returned to her family with other personal possessions after the sinking — which is why seeing the name on the metal lands harder than another Titanic object in a case.

Clips from the Netflix documentary Waking the Titanic (2012), which follows the Mayo villagers’ story, are part of the exhibition.

What Titanic Belfast and the auction house say

Denise Kennedy, Titanic Belfast’s Associate Director of Operations:

It is an honour to be able to share Mary Mangan’s story through the public display of these personal belongings. Seeing Mary’s name engraved on her watch and knowing it played a significant role in identifying her plays a very powerful and personal connection to her story. The accompanying exhibition will give guests the opportunity to discover more about Mary and the Addergoole Fourteen and the profound impact their loss had on their community in Mayo. It is particularly special to share this story with our visitors from Ireland and across the world, giving them a chance to see these remarkable pieces of history at Titanic Belfast.

Andrew Aldridge, Managing Director of Henry Aldridge and Sons:

It is a privilege to be able to bring these deeply personal possessions of Mary Mangan back to Ireland and in particular to Titanic Belfast, where her story can be shared with visitors from around the world. The watch and other items offer a very tangible connection to Mary as an individual, beyond the wider story of the Titanic. We are delighted that they can be viewed by the public before they are offered at auction later this year.

Short version for locals and visitors: the watch, the chain and the portrait are in Belfast now, not forever. 6 October is the cut-off on the loan. Check titanicbelfast.com for Experience tickets and current hours before you go.
