Launched 3 months ago the unfunded campaign came as a response by retailers, pub owners and businesses to encourage people back into Belfast amid Union flag protests, bad weather and the economic downturn. The campaign aimed to stimulate growth in the hospitality and retail sector in the city, which employs more than 35,000 people.
According to statistics and official figures from Facebook, the LoveBelfast message has reached tens of millions of people through social networking sites, including Twitter and Facebook and has rapidly become the biggest social media network in Ireland.
In the 3 months #LoveBelfast network, which includes TakeBackTheCity and St Georges Market facebook posts have reached 400,000 individuals a week. Millions have been reached all over the globe with the message that Belfast is a special city to visit.
#LoveBelfast has also a very successful email newsletter that reaches approx 10,000 people with special offers and deals at local restaurants.
“So many restaurants and pubs have not been using social media to its potential… with over 450,000 potential customers in Belfast regularly using social media, I find retailers and the hospitality industry relying on inexperienced social media PR companies and daily discount websites to promote their message. These are both expensive and non effective on the long term.”
The successful model was also complimented by the #BackinBelfast civic campaign run by Ardmore Advertising which also has been hailed as a great success for civic social media. Also aimed at encouraging people back into the city the campaign received £1.5m in support and Belfast businesses donated offers and giveaways worth £500,000 to the cause.
Both campaigns have created a real buzz and feel good factor to the city of Belfast.”It was sad to hear of the closing of Paul Rankin’s Cayenne recently and every day shops and restaurants are still struggling to stay open. They all need to adapt to new ways to reach the customer”.
The value of a “like on facebook” is estimated at £85 per person in terms of their potential spend and advertising needed to reach that individual.
