Linfield vs Carrick Rangers
Linfield return to the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park this afternoon looking to continue their impressive response to an opening-day defeat — but Carrick Rangers arrive in Belfast in excellent early-season form of their own.
There is plenty at stake when the Blues welcome Carrick Rangers for today’s 3pm kick-off in the BOYLE Sports Premiership.
Both clubs have collected nine points from their opening four league matches, meaning victory could provide an important early boost in what is already developing into a competitive Premiership campaign.
Carrick currently occupy second place, behind early leaders Coleraine, while Linfield sit fifth in a group of clubs locked together on nine points.
For David Healy’s side, however, recent form suggests momentum is building at exactly the right time.
Linfield have responded in style
Linfield’s league campaign could hardly have started in more disappointing fashion.
A 3-0 home defeat to Ballymena United on the opening weekend left the Blues with plenty to think about.
Their response has been emphatic.
First came a 2-1 Big Two victory over Glentoran at Windsor Park.
That was followed by another important home success when Ethan McGee’s second-half header secured a 1-0 victory over Cliftonville.
LoveBelfast covered that Windsor Park encounter, where Linfield’s defensive organisation proved just as important as their match-winning set piece.

The Blues then travelled to newly promoted Limavady United last weekend and recorded a 2-0 victory.
Three consecutive Premiership wins.
Three points behind them from a difficult opening weekend.
And, significantly, back-to-back clean sheets.
Linfield’s league form now reads:
🔵 Linfield 0-3 Ballymena United
✅ Linfield 2-1 Glentoran
✅ Linfield 1-0 Cliftonville
✅ Limavady United 0-2 Linfield
That’s three wins from four, five goals scored and four conceded — with three of those goals against coming in the opening fixture.
Carrick Rangers are flying too
Anyone expecting Carrick Rangers to arrive at Windsor Park simply hoping to frustrate Linfield should think again.
Carrick have made an excellent start themselves.
They opened their Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory over Portadown before travelling to Limavady and winning 2-1.
Their only league defeat so far came against leaders Coleraine, who left Taylor’s Avenue with a 2-0 victory.
Carrick responded in some style.
Last Saturday they travelled to Bangor and produced one of their best results of the campaign so far, winning 4-0.
Their league record therefore stands at:
✅ Carrick Rangers 1-0 Portadown
✅ Limavady United 1-2 Carrick Rangers
❌ Carrick Rangers 0-2 Coleraine
✅ Bangor 0-4 Carrick Rangers
Carrick have scored seven league goals and conceded only three.
They were also involved in a 2-2 draw with Crusaders in the County Antrim Shield on Tuesday night, adding another competitive outing before today’s trip to Belfast.
Paul Heatley has been particularly influential in Carrick’s strong start and currently leads their scoring charts.
Same points, different expectations
That makes today’s encounter particularly interesting.
On paper, Linfield will start as favourites at Windsor Park.
But the league table says Carrick have earned exactly the same number of points so far.
Both have won three of four.
Both have recorded two league clean sheets.
And both come into today’s game having won impressively away from home last weekend.
Carrick’s seven goals give them the stronger attacking return, while Linfield’s recent defensive record is encouraging after that difficult opening afternoon.
Something may have to give.
History strongly favours Linfield
The longer-term record between the teams points firmly towards the Blues.
Linfield have traditionally enjoyed considerable success against Carrick at Windsor Park and are unbeaten in their last 18 home Premiership meetings with today’s opponents.
Across their last six meetings in all competitions listed in the current match data, Linfield have four wins, Carrick one and there has been one draw.
But there is an important warning for the Blues.
The most recent meeting ended with Carrick Rangers beating Linfield 2-0 at Taylor’s Avenue in March.
Before that, the sides drew 0-0 at the same venue in January.
So while Linfield’s longer-term record is formidable, Carrick have already demonstrated very recently that they can cause the Blues problems.
A chance for Linfield to keep climbing
After the opening-day setback, three successive league victories have quickly changed the mood around Linfield’s start.
A fourth consecutive win today would strengthen that momentum and keep the Blues firmly among the early challengers.
It would also continue an encouraging sequence at Windsor Park.
Victories over Glentoran and Cliftonville have already provided two significant home results this season.
Carrick, though, arrive with confidence, goals and absolutely no reason to fear the occasion.
A team sitting second after four matches and fresh from scoring four away from home deserves respect.
Kid for a Quid at Windsor Park
There is also an added incentive for families heading to today’s game, with Linfield running its Kid for a Quid offer.
That means another opportunity for younger supporters to experience an Irish League afternoon at the national stadium without breaking the family budget.

LoveBelfast prediction
This looks considerably more intriguing than the league positions at this stage of the season might normally suggest.
Carrick have started well, are scoring goals and showed with last season’s 2-0 victory over Linfield that they are capable of upsetting the Blues.
But Linfield’s response since losing to Ballymena has been impressive.
Three consecutive league victories, two consecutive clean sheets and home wins over both Glentoran and Cliftonville point towards a side beginning to settle into its rhythm.
Carrick should make them work for it.
LoveBelfast prediction: Linfield 2-1 Carrick Rangers.
A fourth consecutive league victory for the Blues — but perhaps not a comfortable afternoon at Windsor Park.
