Linfield’s early-season recovery continues to gather momentum after Ben Hall’s second-half header secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Carrick Rangers at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park.

David Healy’s side have now won four consecutive BOYLE Sports Premiership matches, an impressive response to the 3–0 opening-day defeat against Ballymena United that had immediately put the Blues under pressure.

This one was far from comfortable.

Carrick arrived in Belfast in excellent form and made Linfield work for everything, but a red card early in the second half changed the complexion of the afternoon before Hall delivered the decisive moment.

Carrick eventually finished with nine players following a second dismissal deep into stoppage time.

Carrick make Linfield work

There was little between the teams during a competitive opening half.

Matthew Fitzpatrick registered Linfield’s first notable attempt after around ten minutes, firing from outside the penalty area and sending his effort beyond the far post.

As the half developed, however, the Blues began finding openings.

Fitzpatrick twice went close to breaking the deadlock. Kym Nelson was in the right place to clear one effort off the line before Carrick goalkeeper Nathan Gartside produced an excellent save to frustrate the Linfield forward again.

Carrick had demonstrated their threat a week earlier with an emphatic 4–0 victory away to Bangor, so there was little prospect of Linfield being handed an easy afternoon. (NI Football League)

The teams went into the interval goalless.

Red card changes the game

The major turning point arrived shortly after the restart.

Former Linfield defender Jimmy Callacher brought down Kobei Moore when the young attacker was through on goal and referee Evan Boyce produced the red card.

Carrick were down to ten.

Linfield did not take long to capitalise.

In the 55th minute, Kirk Millar delivered from the right and Ben Hall rose highest to head the ball beyond Gartside, finally breaking Carrick’s resistance.

Linfield 1–0 Carrick Rangers.

It proved to be enough.

Carrick did threaten on the counter through veteran Paul Heatley, but Isaac Baird produced an important block to protect Linfield’s advantage.

There was further drama in stoppage time when Heatley was dismissed following an incident involving Dane McCullough, leaving Carrick to complete the match with nine men.

The scoreline remained unchanged.

Four league wins in a row

It may not have been Linfield’s most spectacular victory, but the bigger picture will please Healy.

The Blues’ league season started in disastrous fashion when Ballymena United left Windsor Park with a 3–0 victory. Since then, Linfield have responded with:

Linfield 2–1 Glentoran
Linfield 1–0 Cliftonville
Limavady United 0–2 Linfield
Linfield 1–0 Carrick Rangers

That is four victories, six goals scored and just one conceded across those four Premiership matches.

The turnaround looks even more significant considering Carrick began Saturday sitting above Linfield after taking nine points from their opening four fixtures. (NI Football League)

And while the Blues’ midweek County Antrim Shield defeat at the Oval provided a reminder that there is still plenty to improve, their league form is telling a very different story.

From opening-day questions to the top end of the table

There were legitimate questions around Linfield after that opening weekend.

Former Blue Chris McKee scored twice as Ballymena inflicted the 3–0 defeat at Windsor Park, a result which followed Linfield’s early European exit. (Belfast Telegraph)

Less than a month later, the picture has changed considerably.

Four consecutive Premiership victories have put Linfield firmly among the early contenders at the top of the division.

There is a long way to go, of course, and September presents several difficult tests. Linfield travel to Dungannon Swifts next Saturday before visiting Portadown, hosting Crusaders and ending the month with a trip to Coleraine. (NI Football League)

But momentum matters.

Linfield have found it.

And on an afternoon when the performance perhaps wasn’t as eye-catching as some of the results that preceded it, the Blues did what teams with ambitions at the top of the table have to do.

They found a way to win.
