‘Big Gay Cake Sale’
Local Lily Pink baker, Claire Magowan-Brown, is well known for her ravishing rainbow cakes, cupcakes, and just about any kind of cake you can think of. But ‘Big Gay Cakes’? Well, this was her latest recipe for success this weekend.
On Saturday 10th November at Café Cuan in Belfast, Claire got by with a little help from her friends: Manmade, Crumbs Vegan Bakery, Live Deliciously, Victoria Sponge and Check Out My Buns who donated their cakes & bakes to the one and only Big Gay Cake sale. The Bearded Candle Makers, Boden Park Coffee and The Dandylion Floral were also on hand to sell their products to raise funds for the The Rainbow Project.
So why on a crisp Saturday morning in the usually quiet corners of Café Cuan was there a Big Gay Cake sale?
Well, you may have heard of ‘Gay Cake’ gate before – a reference to a high profile human rights case in Belfast that came before the Appeal Court wherein a gay rights activist was refused service by Christian bakery Ashers, after placing an order for a cake that sported the statement ‘ Support Gay Marriage’. The Appeal Court initially ruled in the complainants favour, however the case came to light again mid 2018 when Ashers appealed the decision, and the Supreme Court declared no discrimination against the complainant had taken place. That’s when Claire decided an aptly named Big Gay Cake Sale, was the appropriate answer to the verdict –
‘I decided to run this charity event as it is a very difficult time to be LGBTQ+ in Northern Ireland and the work that The Rainbow Project so is absolutely vital. I’ve been running The Lily Pink Bakery for 7 years and people have been so supportive of my business so I believe it’s very important to give back to the community if you are able to.’
Claire’ s very own cupcakes – Cookie Butter, Vanilla Bean, Lemon Poppy seed, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, Oreo, Chocolate Fudge and infamous / famous Rainbow marble cake was available by the slice. Queues were out the door even before the 11am kick off time and even after every last crumb had been sold, attendees continued to donate making the grand total £3021.48 before every £1 of coffee sold was added.
Usually you can’t have your cake and eat it too – but if the Big Gay Cake Sale and The Rainbow Project fundraiser is anything to go by – you most certainly can.
You can still donate by purchasing Claires very own Rainbow Cake recipe, with all proceeds going to The Rainbow Project

The queue might have been crazy at The Big Gay Cake Sale at @CafeCuan today but it was definitely worth the wait for the amazing @lilypinkbakery cupcakes. Great way to raise money for @trpni. 🍰🌈 #RainbowProject #CafeCuan pic.twitter.com/vcySHOeRoi
